Expecting baby boy number 2. We both like the name Cyril. But I am a little worried that my hormones are playing a part.
Brothers name is John.

Sorry OP but you did ask.. it’s a very bad and unattractive name in my opinion

SageRosemary · 02/02/2022 09:30

I rather like Cyril. Reminds me of Cyril Cusack of the famous acting dynasty.

IBloodyLoveMichaelJackson · 02/02/2022 09:30

Absolutely vile

Campervan69 · 02/02/2022 09:32

My son has it as a middle name but only because it's after his grandad. I wouldn't lumber a child with it as a first name sorry. How about Robert instead? Goes well with John.

He would be a deeply cool namesake, true!

My son has a friend called Cyril (now aged 19)

Every time you say his name to someone new, eg - ds and his friend Cyril went to... you see people's eyes open a little taken aback at the name.

Some even go so far as to say Cyril???
And some say Cyril??? good grief, what were his parents thinking.

I am so used to it, that I don't notice, and I don't think it is that different to some of the other old man names around, like Stanley, Arthur, Bertie.
But that is the reaction that people give, so you should expect that.

Toanewstart22 · 02/02/2022 09:39

If you birthed a 94 year old - perfect
Otherwise - no

Joystir59 · 02/02/2022 09:40

Passive aggressive reaction to not wanting a second child/boy?

This is from a friends mother Now imagine actually being 19 year old Cyril faced with this

@thevassal

Urgh. sounds like the obnoxious invalid child in a victorian children's novel.
This! Exactly this!
KirstenBlest · 02/02/2022 09:43

Nice one, Cyril.

brightmonitorx2 · 02/02/2022 09:44

Oh guys I'm so sad I guess it's a no go if so many people hate it. I mean obviously I could call him whatever I wanted but i did want to check as it's a bit of an unusual name.

We had Charles on the list and I like it with John, however I think Charlie, though I like the name, is very popular.

From the names mentioned I do really like Stanley, Hugh and Peter.

Also had liked Francis/Frank but John's middle name is Francis.

David might be nice..

for what it is worth, I think Stanley is as bad worse than Cyril, but I know a few baby Stanleys (why?? just why??)

HoldingTheDoor · 02/02/2022 09:48

David might be nice.

David is a great name that deserves a comeback. It works well with John.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/02/2022 09:49

Opening the thread I thought “don’t do it, how cruel”

But thinking about it, and having repeated it several times I really like how it sounds! I think it might be due a revival, but I wouldn’t want my ds to be the first and only, it does sound too out there, and not in a good way - yet.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/02/2022 09:50

Agree. And Sidney.
brightmonitorx2 · 02/02/2022 09:52

This discussion has had us looking through other lists and we have found the name!
Honestly don't know why we hadn't thought of it as it was high up on list for DS1.
I'll have to leave Cyril to braver mothers than I 🤣

He'll be Nicholas.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/02/2022 09:52

Its one of those names where it's that awful it's adorable.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/02/2022 09:53

Nicholas is brilliant. As long as you don’t mind Nick.

20viona · 02/02/2022 09:54

Dreadful

Cissyandflora · 02/02/2022 09:55

The only Cyril I know is called Surreal by friends. Friends who couldn’t accept Cyril as a name.

It’s also a bit like sorrel

IslaRoseGraceEtc · 02/02/2022 09:55

Aw Nicholas is perfect. Nick and John sound like lovely young men.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 02/02/2022 09:57

Do you remember the 1980s cartoon called The Raccoons? The baddie in that is called Cyril Sneer. But it's quite a dated cultural reference and probs not worth worrying about!
What about Cyrus? Or Corin?

Joystir59 · 02/02/2022 09:57

Nicholas is great!

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 02/02/2022 09:58

Aww, Nicholas is lovely - sorry I posted before seeing the update! Xx
