Already have 2 girls between myself and my partner that end in a 'lee' sound, so would need to be pronounced Cora-lye. What's your opinion on it?

I think everyone will pronounce it Cora-lee and you and she will be correcting them forever.

Underthestairsbears · 29/12/2021 23:03

I think the film is pronounced Cora-lye. I think you'd be ok.

Meadowblossom · 29/12/2021 23:05

I would read it as Corra Lee.
I like it.

WhatScratch · 29/12/2021 23:06

The film is Coraline. Unless you meant a different film?

I think Coralie will be pronounced with a -lee by enough people for it to annoy you and your DD.

How about Coraline?

nocoolnamesleft · 29/12/2021 23:07

I definitely read it Corra Lee.

No it's 100% cora- Lee

Go for Coraline

Moonlaserbearwolf · 29/12/2021 23:10

I would pronounce Cor-a-lee, and I think most people would. She might get fed up with strangers pronouncing it wrong.

Personally, I also dislike your proposed pronunciation, but that's just my opinion! I do like Coralie pronounced 'lee'.

Peaseblossum22 · 29/12/2021 23:10

I know a Coralie , she is a ‘lee’ sound at the end . What about Corinna instead.

givemepiece · 29/12/2021 23:15

If you really love that pronunciation you'd have to spell it Coralye

scarpa · 29/12/2021 23:23

I'd pronounce that Corra-lee, sorry OP.

Cora by itself is gorgeous?

Hairyfriend · 29/12/2021 23:25

A family friend is Coralie and pronounced Cor-a-lee. Choose another name like Coral, Coraline etc or pronounce it the more common way.

Please don't subject a child to have to spell out and pronounce their name to every person who assumes its Corra-Lee.

BurbageBrook · 29/12/2021 23:32

Your pronunciation is wrong, as it’s French and pronounced Cora-lee. Plus the pronunciation sounds like lye soap.

SoftSheen · 29/12/2021 23:34

Instead, consider either Coraline or Lorelei.

Kite22 · 29/12/2021 23:39

It isn't a name I would choose myself, either way...all sounds a bit 'The Waltons' to me, but if I saw it written down I would say "Cora-Lee" like so many others, so I think that will just annoy her throughout her life.

Theworldisquiethere · 29/12/2021 23:40

Fun fact, Neil Gaiman’s Coraline originated from him misspelling Caroline

I’ve met a Coralie and it was Cora-lee so that’s how I’d automatically pronounce it. Would you consider just Coral or Cora?

Alayalaya · 29/12/2021 23:42

Everyone will pronounce it Cora-Lee, and when you correct them to Cora-Lye they will automatically say Coraline. So why not just go for Coraline?

sageandbasil · 29/12/2021 23:44

I read it as Cora Lye

Frazzled2207 · 29/12/2021 23:45

@SoftSheen

Ooh I love Lorelei (to rhyme with eye)
SonicBroom · 29/12/2021 23:50

Neither… Coralie surely = Coralee. Coraline surely will be mistaken for Caroline.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/12/2021 01:04

It will be pronounced Cor-ra-lee, so don’t use it

Foxglovers · 30/12/2021 16:55

I know someone with this name and she pronounces is Corra lee

HacerSonarSusPasos · 30/12/2021 16:57

Everyone will pronounce it Cora-lee, as they should.

Go for Lorelei if you are set on the lye ending.

Kitkat151 · 30/12/2021 17:01

Always pronounced Corra - Lee .....you would spend a lifetime correcting people.... and they would still call her Corra-Lee .... choose another name

HacerSonarSusPasos · 30/12/2021 17:05

I know what you mean, but the thing is the strangers would not be pronouncing it wrong. It's a well established french name with a very uncontroversial pronounciation.
