Amber or Emily?

I like both of these names but the only people I see with them nowadays are teenagers or 20 year olds. Am I being silly?

You’ve obviously never met @RustyBear daughter 😂

CeibaTree · 19/12/2021 21:09

Amber is a beautiful name. Emily is a nice enough name, but nice as in pleasant enough but quite boring!

delshell · 19/12/2021 21:42

Emily

yaboreme · 19/12/2021 21:45

Emily

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 19/12/2021 21:47

Both nice names. I prefer Amber.

Queenoftheashes · 19/12/2021 21:50

Amber is better it’s where dinosaurs come from

celestebellman · 19/12/2021 21:55

Amber
Emily is a bit wet/ dull and very popular.
I have also known nice Ambers :) (to be fair most Emilys I have encountered have also been nice).
I guess Amber may be a little dated to eighties/ nineties but don't think it was ever hugely popular so I don't see that as an issue.

Amber

WeasilyPleased · 19/12/2021 22:49

Amber is stronger and less twee than Emily.

WaitinginVain · 19/12/2021 23:06

I like Amber. Emily is fine but a bit boring.

nannybeach · 20/12/2021 08:18

Folk saying amber is dated, then mentioning names that are always around!!! Both Amber and Emily are very old English. Emily, popular and several in one class,is that a good thing! When my oldest DD was at primary school, there were 3 Sarahs in one class with her, then at a different school,3 Samanthas. She is neither. When I was at school, Mary,Susan Jennifer, nope, not me!

Kokeshi123 · 20/12/2021 08:25

Amber! I don't think it was ever common enough that it would sound dated (in the same way that Jennifer or Tracey might).

Emily is OK but there's something a bit simpering about it. I know several lovely Emilys but still don't like the name much, which I think is telling.

BeKindBeYou · 20/12/2021 09:18

I love Amber :)

emmathedilemma · 20/12/2021 10:13

Emily, it's more classic than Amber

Geminimama88 · 20/12/2021 10:30

I love amber x

Edenember · 20/12/2021 14:00

My vote goes to Amber. I like many classic names but I’ve always had an irrational dislike of Emily, I find it frilly and twee. No offense to any Emily’s as I’m demonstrably very much in the minority disliking it. Amber does have very 90s vibes for me, but I think it would be refreshing on a little now. It’s one that can come back.

CrispAndFrosty · 20/12/2021 20:22

Amber. More distinctive and I don't think it's too dated to any particular moment. There's Amber Rudd aged 58, all the way down to baby Ambers I've heard of.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 20/12/2021 20:50

Emily is a timeless classic. I don’t know why people associate Amber with strippers but it is the first thing that comes to mind.

Helpstopthepain · 20/12/2021 20:54

Emily is more elegant

PanicBuyingSprouts · 20/12/2021 20:56

I really like Amber.

ttcpatronisers · 20/12/2021 21:31

Amber - hate Emily it's so 80s!!

strawberrymilk7 · 21/12/2021 11:30

Emily for me, by a mile. Although I did really like Amber in love island (yes it is rubbish tv, and yes I love it!)

LuckyMum3 · 21/12/2021 11:31

Emily. Not keen on Amber.

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/12/2021 17:43

Amber is more/ will date more IMO. Emily is fairly timeless and still very popular. And I prefer it as a name.
