Mumofgirls2017 · 15/12/2021 06:54

Favourites are Ivy, Nora, Ada and Rosie for girls abs Henry, Rex, Otto and Albert for boys.

Think Mary is nice and will be unusual but will also seem v dated and not ready for comeback. Jasmine, Ruby and Robyn (prefer spelling) are fine but I’d say are about to date fast. I’m not too familiar with Rafi or Rafiq but may be from different culture. I’m not keen on Gower at all. Others are ok.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 15/12/2021 06:56

I think all the names are nice. I like Nori better than Nora.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/12/2021 06:57

Robin - love it
Ruby - like it, bit overused.

Rosie - way overused. Twee as a full name
Ivy - lovely but overused
Ava - way overused.
Jasmine - nice, getting popular
Ada - I don’t like it as harsh, but now very popular
Mary - nice underused classic
Nora - I hate it, Honor instead?

Rex - name for a dog/downmarket
Otto - getting popular, but makes me think Nazis
Albert - way overused
Maximilian - great
Gower - what?! No - sounds like Glower
Henry - nice but way overused.
Rafi - not a full name, but Raphael nn Rafi is nice
Rafiq - odd unless it’s part of your heritage
Beau - quite like it
Gene - hate it. Also associate with naughty boys

Lushplease · 15/12/2021 07:00

Jasmine and Maximilian both stand out to me as by far the best names.
( WTF is Gower about?)

MinnieJackson · 15/12/2021 07:21

I like Ivy and Beau the best.
Bodhi or Remi are nice. I was at school with a girl called Beau and thought it was cool (was jealous Grin)

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 15/12/2021 07:24

Rosie or mary
Henry

Have you thought about Robert for a boy?

Invisiblewoman1 · 15/12/2021 07:41

I am adding-

Edwin
Arthur
William - (Bill)
Peter
Ralph

I love Rafi and the full version is an Arabic name - Rafiq which means friend. So I think that’s also nice. I’m not Arabic but Laila and Jasmine are both Arabic names which often get mentioned on here without culture coming up so why would Rafiq be weird?

OP posts:
GemmaRuby · 15/12/2021 07:48

Jasmine is a flower (Yasmin is an Arabic name).
I take your point about Laila - it seems to have transitioned from a Muslim name to popular western name.

However I do think it would be unusual to use Rafiq if you have no Arabic or Muslim heritage. Obviously there’s no rule to say you can’t - but don’t be surprised that people think it’s an odd decision.

Invisiblewoman1 · 15/12/2021 08:11

@GemmaRuby I just find it interesting that for some names it’s ok to use without the cultural background of the names origin but others it’s odd.

felulageller · 15/12/2021 08:20

Robin a bit old fashioned and more a boys name to me, but it sounds nice and would make a good middle name
Ruby love this and it's become more underused recently
Rosie far too common and not serious enough for an adult 'rosie and jim' tune in my head
Ivy love this
Ava will date terribly which is a shame as it's a good name
Jasmine will get confused with Yasmin
Ada a bit ugly
Mary far too religious
Nora ugly

Rex a dog's name
Otto sounds like a car
Albert Victoria
Maximilian max on its own is ok, the full version is pretentious
Gower sounds like shower
Henry killed his wives
Rafi Raphael is fine
Rafiq only if to reflect your culture
Beau nice

LeftieLucy · 15/12/2021 08:25

Love Gene. It’s one of my favourites.

I like Ruby and Ada from your girls list.

I think it’s to do with popularity, but I suppose someone has to be the first non-Muslim person to use it before it becomes popular for non-Muslims.

I do actually like Rafiq, going to add it to my middle name list for imaginary future DS (I have Muslim heritage).

My actual DS’s name is on your list so we share some similar tastes. Another name we considered is Jasper

Wellington17 · 15/12/2021 09:07

Robin - Love it - on my list but maybe with the Robyn spelling
Ruby - Reminds me of badly behaved dogs (I used to work in dog rescue)
Rosie - Cute, but much prefer Rosa
Ivy - Had it on my list for previous DD but glad I didn;t use it as it's everywhere now
Ava - Nice but popular
Jasmine - Nice
Ada - Nice but popular
Mary - OK... I've got a thing for the Scottish version Mairi (but the poor thing would have issues with spelling her whole life)
Nora - Like but might prefer with an "h" on the end

Rex - YES YES YES! Would love to call a future DS this
Otto - Not sure. Think I like it
Albert - Nah
Maximilian - Bit glitzy. How about Maxim, Maxton,
Gower - I can see the appeal, but also see why others think its a bit weird.
Henry - Nah - boring.
Rafi - Maybe
Rafiq - No
Beau - No

What about Sylvie, Rowan, Raya, Cora, Marla, Nessa, Remi

or

Roscoe, Baxter, Chester, Remy, Griffin?

KirstenBlest · 15/12/2021 11:04

Robin - ok, but I know several men called Robin
Ruby - ok, but not one I'd pick
Rosie - nice, popular
Ivy - dislike
Ava - thoroughly dislike
Jasmine - like
Ada - not keen
Mary - like
Nora - not keen

Rex - ok but
Otto - not keen
Albert - not keen
Maximilian - Max is nice
Gower - it's a place name not a person's name
Henry - fine
Rafi - no
Rafiq - yes if muslim
Beau - no

emmathedilemma · 15/12/2021 15:06

Ivy - no
Ava - overused
Jasmine - no
Ada - overused
Mary - good
Nora - good

Rex - only for dogs
Otto - no
Albert - good
Maximilian - Max is ok, I find the full thing a bit of a mouthful!
Gower - peninsula
Henry - good
Rafi - sounds like a nn for Raphael
Rafiq - i would assume you're Asian but none of your other names fit this genre?
Beau - awful

KirstenBlest · 15/12/2021 15:21

@OP, Laila is arabic, Jasmine isn't. Laila means night and Jasmine is a flower. Rafiq meant companion or friend but in the context of friend of Islam.

Laila, despite being arabic will disappear into the Lila, Lyra, Lily, Isla type names but Rafiq is used pretty much excusively by muslims.

I think people would expect a Rafiq to be a muslim or have arab heritage.

MoominMeggy · 15/12/2021 17:05

Robin - quite like, love nn Bobby, but still feels a bit 80s / 90s, like Amber
Ruby - ok, reminds me of Scarlett
Rosie - prefer Rosa
Ivy - nice, quite trendy
Ava - lovely, v popular
Jasmine - nice, but will be shortened to Jazz
Ada - ove
Mary - dull
Nora - love, prefer Norah

Rex - I know two, not keen
Otto - nope
Albert - nooo... very old man
Maximilian - ok
Gower - peninsula
Henry - nice
Rafi - meh
Rafiq - nope
Beau - what if he isn't?

MinnieJackson · 16/12/2021 02:20

My son goes to school with a girl called Rafi, it's her full name. We also have Red, (I love!!!) Railey, Boe, Leigh, Bodhi, Cassius, Idris. I still think beau ( for either sex) or ivy and Remi or Billie, Matilde, Eloias maybe?
