You have to name a child from the first five names in whatever publication you last read, book, magazine, newspaper, whatever. What are your options? I have:

Joe
Vladimir
Noah
Elizabeth
Valérie

@Greebosmum

Ridcully Ponder Magrat Diamanda Esme
😂 Another fairly niche group of names!
MistandMud · 14/12/2021 07:53

I checked from the start of the book I'm reading and was surprised to find (in order):
Edmund
Aleister
Dave
Joan
Leda

...I could make the book much more obvious by going with Cormoran, Leda, Robin, Margot, Dennis
**@TheSpiral* is reading The Ninth House and @ApplePippa* the wonderful Assassin's Apprentice. 😄

No prizes for guessing what I'm reading. The first five names I can remember as Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, Samwise and Hamfast.
Indeed I am! Very glad I don't have to use any of those baby names for real though - not sure my DS would appreciate being called Burrich!

Tolkien is much better at names...

ApplePippa · 14/12/2021 08:00

@AltheaVesr1t just taken proper note of your username!

I am indeed and weirdly the Assassin's Apprentice is lying on my bedside table ready to be read next!

Mine are really easy: Madeleine, Florence, Agatha and Dahlia

WildCherryBlossom · 14/12/2021 11:54

Hamnet - no!
Susanna - yes, pretty
Judith - possibly
John - meh
Agnes - yes, possibly

There are plenty more names further in but I guess it would be John or Susanna if I had to choose from the first 5

BlooBagoo · 14/12/2021 12:05

Looks like I'm not the only one reading this recently.

Bathsheba
Gabriel
Frank
Fanny
Liddy

Although I could be tempted by the very minor characters of Temperance and Soberness. Grin

Had to come back to add the first five from the book I'm on now - like others, an Elinor Brent-Dyer.

Philathea
Vida
Salathiel, known as Sally
(these three are sisters)
Dorcas, sometimes called Tabby
Dorinda

The first three are family names. "Philathea ... was very proud of her family history, and also of the three uncommon names of herself and her sisters. Not that she ever mentioned it; that was not done."

@Hyperion - that old vegetarian biographer/moralist, perhaps?

(I cheated - I did look it up, but only to check . Once - even long ago, as a student - you've read a name like Philopoemen, you don't ever easily forget it!)
