Grace

Katie is mid-30s. She was the girl at school that everybody wanted to be. She is so pretty and has perfect hair. She's not a ditzy blond though - she's extremely smart and works as a GP.

It is surprising that given her brains and beauty she still isn't married with children, even though that's what she's wanted for a while now. She's dating Steven and everyone is secretly rooting for her that he will be the one.

Alfie.

Alfie is a cheeky boy with floppy mousy brown hair. He’s funny, loud and confident.

Maeve

Maeve is short and slim, with green eyes and dark hair in a bob. She looks a bit like a little fairy or an elf, which you mean as a compliment, but you don't dare tell her as she can be a bit fiesty.

She's early twenties but for some reason seems much younger, maybe because of her mannerisms - when she's excited she jumps around like a child and squeals. When she's angry she stamps her feet. She gets tearful easily, either because something is lovely or sad or unfair or infuriating, but she doesn't full-on cry much. She feels emotions very strongly but then gets over them very quickly. She is very animated, and speaks using exaggerated hand gestures which for some reason would annoy you if someone else did it, but doesn't annoy you when it's Maeve. Her laugh is loud and makes everyone else laugh just by hearing it.

She changes her mind a lot about what she wants to do with her life. Something that involves travelling the world. Or maybe something to do with psychology. Or maybe something arty? She just can't decide.

At the moment she works in a wholesome country pub to earn some extra money while she figures things out. In her free time she goes to old bookshops and spends all her money on old books. She likes to smell the old books just as much ws she likes to read them.

She looks most at home in the countryside. You can't imagine her in a city, except maybe Brighton. You've never seen her house but in your mind she lives in the forest with the fairies.

Merryn.

Merryn grew up in Cornwall, the daughter of a hippie surfer mother and a good-looking father who was often off on his "hobbies" but was probably inveigling and shagging pretty young women down that way for music festivals. Merryn chose to politely tolerate both parents' flakiness but always kept her own goals in focus. At 16 she found a weekend job as an assistant in a local hospital. By 21 she was a registered nurse. She's now about to qualify as a doctor and has lined up a junior registrar position in the hospital that employed her as a teen. Merryn has her own smart little flat and goes surfing with her mum on her days off. Once Covid restrictions ease she plans to walk the Camino de Santiago and shag some handsome foreigners who look nothing like her dad.

Alex (Alexander) refers to himself as Al.
He is 36 and lives in Bristol.
He works in publishing and wears soft suede shoes and jeans to work every day.
He carries a big leather satchel and wears trendy knitted jumpers.
Al wasn’t always the cool kind. He was very small as a teenager and was very shy.
In his 20s he changed considerably and is unrecognisable from back then.
He has a girlfriend Jules and they love bars, restaurants and socialising with friends.
Jules is 30 and has just found out she is pregnant with twins.
They are determined that they won’t be ‘that couple’ & parenthood ‘won’t change their current lifestyle’....

Sylvia is mid 50's, a dinner lady at the local primary Sxhool and rescues cats, she has 14! never married, but has a soft spot for the school head cook

Tiffany

Tiffany is in her 20s and thinks it's very important to 'take care of yourself'. She wears a lot of fake tan, has hair extensions and long, gel nails. She lives in the suburbs on a non-descript street with small family house built in the 80s. She's actually a nice enough girl, really, but has inherited the idea from her parents that she and her family are quite posh because the women are very concerned with their appearance and her mum owns a real Chanel bag (eBay). She's recently joined OnlyFans and is making quite a lot of money but hasn't told her mum as she's not sure whether her mum would be pleased about the money and potential for minor fame or think it dragged the family down to being a bit 'common'.

Jasper

Jasper has curly chestnut hair and a large forehead. He wears mustard cords and a brushed cotton shirt. Shoes that look like Cornish pasties. He is very clever and quietly kind. But socially awkward and goes home early a lot.

Isobel

Isobel is 21. She has just graduated with a degree in psychology and is deciding which job offer to take. Whatever she choses she will stay in the university town, renting a flat rather than go back to where her mum and dad are. They miss her so much though.
She has made lots of good friends at university and is What I g a flat with her friend Leah. They get on well, going to gigs together and have plans to go to festivals together. Isobel has long brown hair and brown eyes She wears a lot of the dye stuff and is vegan.

New name: John

John is in his late 60s. Short balding man who loves watching rugby. He came out of a loveless marriage 10 years ago and sees his grown up son quite often especially when there's a good match to watch on TV. 5 years ago John met Mirium, his neighbour's aunt who is also in her 60s. She is vibrant and has brought love and laughter back into his life. She also makes the most amazing West Indian dishes which John is very appreciative of.

Jackie

Jackie is 55. She has a salt and pepper no nonsense easy care hairstyle and is a martyr to her sciatica. She has never married, and never had a relationship with a man outside of a best forgotten fumble at a Polytechnic bar in 1984.

She has worked at M&S for years and is an absolute genius at Bra fittings. One glance from Sandra and she'll have you in a 34F soon as look at you. She's immensely proud of her skill and unfortunately carries it through to situations where she really shouldn't, like suggesting to women at bus stops that they should consider a smaller back size, or once- memorably- to the area manager's wife at the Christmas do that she needed an underwire 'to really perk up those bad boys.'

She lives in a downstairs maisonette in Sydenham with a red kneed tarantula called Mr Tickles, and a California Kingsnake called Absalom. Absalom escaped his tank in 2019 and was found by Derek (who lives in the upstairs maisonette) wrapped around his boiler in the airing cupboard.
Jackie was relieved to have him returned, but thought it wise at the time not to mention the existence of Mr Tickles, as Derek seemed traumatised enough at the time by the appearance of Absalom.

Niamh

Niamh is a beautiful, intelligent woman of 25 who is bookish and academic and a bit socially awkward. Long curly brown hair and green eyes. She has a few good friends but isn't dating anyone and can't even begin to think how to meet a man who is as smart as she is. Not that she thinks that as she's quite anxious and low self esteem. She is utterly adored by her parents.

Emily is a fifteen year old girl, very confident and quite attention seeking. Likes to show off and be the centre of attention.

Rosie

Rosie has soft dimpled hands and a generous bosom. She loves cashmere cardigans in buttery colours which look lovely with her caramel coloured hair. She's a giggler.

After her mother died, she gave in to her hoarding tendencies and now has a bungalow in Tenterden which is packed to the gills with copies of Metro and empty packets of Soreen. Her bedroom is so full of clothes she's bought at the local British heart foundation that she has to sleep on the sofa. Her cat hasn't been seen for several weeks now and Rosie fears he came a cropper under a teetering pile of shoeboxes in the study.

Marjorie

Marjorie is 85, she is a widow. has 15 grandchildren.

Harriet

Harriet 65-70 a little faded was once rather beautiful. Soft character. Over polite. Loved by family. I we looked by quite a few friends.
