tweedlewee · 11/11/2021 21:47

Due a little boy in 6 weeks. He will be brother to James and Lyra.

We love long names with nice nicknames, and so far have

Atticus - Kit for short
Zachary - Zac
Augustus - Gus

Does anyone have any other ideas along these lines?

Thanks!

How do you get Kit from Atticus??
Just choose a name you like. Your child will ultimately decide what shortened version (if any) they prefer.

Usual disclaimer that nicknames are fluid, and your child might want a different nickname to the one you chose or no nickname at all but for fun. Maybe some are a bit out there given your children have popular names.
Benedict - Ned
Casimir - Cass
Evander - Van
Gabriel - Gabe
Lysander - Sacha
Orlando - Lando
Peregrine - Perry
Raphael - Raffy
Sebastian - Bas

Nogidintuctus - Noggy

Friends have a toddler Cornelius who goes by Neil. Think I like it better than good old Con, Connie, Corny, or Cor. Also know a teenage Alasdair who goes by Dair (pronounced like the verb "to dare").

I'd probably go for Alexander, Christopher, or Nicholas for a variety of good options.

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 11/11/2021 23:15

Atticus is a fantastic name, I’d go with that

RAFHercules · 11/11/2021 23:16

Benedictus
Nathaniel
Michael

mm40 · 11/11/2021 23:27

Isambard - Izzy

Friends have a toddler Cornelius who goes by Neil

Shame to be called Cornelius only to be known as Neil, which to me is a completely different name.

But pretty much any name can be made shorter I to a nickname eg

Theodore- Theo
Christopher - Chris
Quentin - Quinn
Frederick - Fred
Tobias - Toby
Alfred - Alfie

ESGdance · 12/11/2021 09:21

Bartholomew (Bart)
Gilbert (Gil)
Jeremiah (Jer)
Malachi (Mal)
Archibald (Archie)
Josiah (Joe)
Barnaby (Barnaby)
Cornelius (Con)
Aloysius (Louis)
Ludovic (Ludo)
Harold (Hal)
Lorenzo (Enzo)

Christopher = Kit
Alexander = Zander or Alex or Sandy
Sebastian = Seb
Jonathan = Jon
Joseph = Joe
Nicholas = Nick
Theodore = Teddy or Theo
Francis = Frank or Frankie
Frederick = Fred or Freddie

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 12/11/2021 09:36

How is Kit a diminutive of Atticus?

SunLovingMummy · 12/11/2021 09:37

My two, if I was having a second son, would have been either:-

Nathaniel or Jonathan with the nickname Than or Thane (pronounced like main). I had a friend growing up who had the most stunning older brother nicknamed Than (pronounced like tan but starting with TH)

Or

Andrew with nickname Drew

Stokey · 12/11/2021 09:46

I'd have thought Christopher = Kit

I always liked Isambard with Bard as the short name, or Sam

Ezekiel - Zeke is cool

There's lots of Old Testament inspiration for names that could be shortened

Blubells · 12/11/2021 10:38

Chris is the most natural and obvious shortening of Christopher.

Atticus could shorten to Atti or Tic?

But of course a nickname can be anything, unrelated to the full name.
