Long boys names with good nicknames

tweedlewee · 11/11/2021 21:47

Due a little boy in 6 weeks. He will be brother to James and Lyra.

We love long names with nice nicknames, and so far have

Atticus - Kit for short
Zachary - Zac
Augustus - Gus

Does anyone have any other ideas along these lines?

Thanks!

Everyone knows Kit is dim of Christopher.

It’s a bit like saying Oksana nn Kate.

MirandaBlu · 12/11/2021 15:15

@Blubells

Friends have a toddler Cornelius who goes by Neil

Shame to be called Cornelius only to be known as Neil, which to me is a completely different name.

But pretty much any name can be made shorter I to a nickname eg

Theodore- Theo
Christopher - Chris
Quentin - Quinn
Frederick - Fred
Tobias - Toby
Alfred - Alfie

Didn't say he is "only" called Neil and never called Cornelius, but Cornelius is perhaps a bit long for every day. That's kind of why diminutives (and nicknames) exist.

@MirandaBlu

Friends have a toddler Cornelius who goes by Neil. Think I like it better than good old Con, Connie, Corny, or Cor. Also know a teenage Alasdair who goes by Dair (pronounced like the verb "to dare").

I'd probably go for Alexander, Christopher, or Nicholas for a variety of good options.

Your friends called their kid Cornelius?

So have I - admittedly a middle name. Again a wonderful ancient Latin and family name - my son loves it and has chosen to use it professionally (creative industry) instead of his first name!

LozMarieFielder · 12/11/2021 19:06

Cassander - Xander
Frederick - Freddie
Maxwell/Maximillian - Max
Sebastain - Seb/Bash/Bastian
Leonardo/Leopold - Leo
Francisco - Franz, Francis, Cisco
Sylvester- Syl

My two favourites.

Arthur - NN Arti

And suddenly, after a local historical event.

Oswald (NN Os/Ossy

And my very favourite

Cuthbert (NN Bert/Bertie).

What are you liking @tweedlewee

Deansgate · 12/11/2021 19:10

Two???

I make that three. 😂😊

tweedlewee · 12/11/2021 19:13

I know of two boys called Atticus who go by Kit. It's not that much of a stretch really is it?

Donovon - Donny, Don
Solomon’s- Solly
Raffety - Raff
Zachariah - Zach/Zak
Finnegan - Finn
Maximilian - Max
Jeremiah - Jem
Sullivan - Sully

tweedlewee · 12/11/2021 19:17

I LOVE Arthur, and Art is lovely, but it really doesn't go with my accent @Deansgate

@LozMarieFielder that's reminded me that I love Cassius with Cass for short!!

@SunLovingMummy Drew would be my absolute go to but bils name is Andrew and unfortunately he's a bit of a prick

Something I've heard recently is Gideon but I cannot for the life of me drag a nice nickname from that

@Riverlee Zach, Finn and Sully are going on my list - Sully is quite close to my name though and illiterates with our surname but I do like it (my name isn't sally)

I love Gideon too. I think Giddy is cute as a nickname, but as a permanent shortening (like Alexander to Alex) it doesn’t work. As you’re not opposed to a bit of a stretch I’ve heard Gio, Deon, Don, Eon. Not sure if any of those appeal (I actually prefer Giddy/Gid) but if you’re a nicknamey person, he’ll probably end up with something.
Lemonsyellow · 12/11/2021 19:44

Not Atticus.

Guy? I know one whose diminutive/ pet name is lengthened to the Italian form Guido.

coastergirl · 12/11/2021 20:19

I love Benjamin (Ben) and Alexander (Alex, Lex, Xander etc). But I have a Zachary, known as Zach or Zachie. Love it.

ESGdance · 12/11/2021 20:41

It’s hard to control the nn as it’s hijacked by friends at school unless you call them the nn from birth
