Hi all,

My hubby and I are almost set on calling our baby girl Delilah. We both really like it and think that it's a pretty name. Plus a lot of you probably know the song Hey there Delilah. One of the lyrics is "what's it like in New York City" and we just realised that we want to name her Delilah, and we got engaged in NYC. It just gave it more special meaning.

Our second option is lorelei, which we also love but I think I might be leaning towards Delilah more. We can always save Lorelei for baby number 2 if we have another girl in the future.

Thoughts? Which one do you prefer?

Delilah.
I really don't like Lorelei though.

Hoowhoowho · 31/10/2021 21:58

To be fair, the story of Delilah is not much better than that of Lorelei!

Both perfectly fine names but associated with negative stories.

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2021 22:02

@Hoowhoowho that's true!

We know the story of Lorelei now, but I don't think I know the story of Delilah? I really should do more research 😅

Delilah is a lovely name, definitely my favourite of the two

Notdoingthis · 31/10/2021 22:23

Delilah was the no.1 baby girl name last year in the town I live.

Fivebeanchilli · 31/10/2021 23:01

Delilah was the lover of Samson (Old testament). She was a Philistine (a different tribe from him). He was unusually strong and Delilah was bribed by the Philistine leaders to find out the secret of his strength. He lied to her and she said "if you really loved me you'd tell me" so he told her it was his long hair. She then got someone to cut his hair in his sleep and he was captured by the Philistines because he had lost his strength and he got put in jail and his eyes blinded. So Christian and Jewish history/doctrine tends to paint her as a manipulative woman who uses her sexual wiles to get her own way. I'm sure there is more nuance than that though. And the song's nice!

Lightswitch123 · 31/10/2021 23:03

Deliliah. Lovely name!

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 01/11/2021 07:02

Delilah for sure!

Animood · 01/11/2021 08:50

Sorry I don't like either 🙈

Lorelei is a mouthful. No one will know how to spell / pronounce it.

Delilah will have people singing "why why why Delilah" at her for her entire life. Why do that to a child?

Amdone123 · 01/11/2021 08:53

I love Delilah.
I do know one and I admit I burst into song when I say her name. She's only 4 but seems to find it amusing !
I don't like the other.
Like Tallulah as a pp said. I burst into song when I hear that too.

Cantstopthewaves · 01/11/2021 09:03

Love Delilah.

grey12 · 01/11/2021 09:18

@Fivebeanchilli didn't Samson then take down their temple while they were praying and killed everyone? That's how my DGM used to tell the story. Her name was Dalila, Delilah in my language, so she used to like telling it Smile

Flamingosnbears · 01/11/2021 09:35

Delilah - as it has personal meaning to you both and she'll love the story of her name when she's older 😊.
Lorelei is a lovely name too but it hasn't got the personal meaning.

Roselilly36 · 01/11/2021 09:40

I wouldn’t choose it, not that I don’t like it, but DH shares a name that is quite similar to a very popular song, he absolutely hated kids taking the mickey about it at school. And chooses to go by a shorten name. I would chose Lorelei.

Cornettoninja · 01/11/2021 09:42

I love Delilah and Lorelei.

Granted neither of them have fluffy legends associated with them but they’re beautiful names. Eve/Evie is fine even though if you were giving weight to biblical stories she really dropped the ball!

I wouldn’t worry about ‘why, why, why Delilah’ personally - she might like it! Nobody seems to mind the association of Alice and ‘who the fuck is Alice’ given its recent rise in popularity (although I accept there’s probably some generational differences there).

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 01/11/2021 13:34

I think the story of Delilah is worse than Lorelei! I liked Lorelei's story - made me want to use the name!

Pemba · 01/11/2021 13:43

Delilah is a lovely mellifluous name, and you have the option of calling her Lilah for short.

Lorelei sounds a bit scary! It is from the German legend, but apparently is it not used as a first name in Germany, and they would find it odd to do so. I like Laura though.

Concestor · 01/11/2021 13:46

I hate the name Delilah, it sounds really heavy and aggressive to me, plus I hate the song! But it sounds like it's special to you so go for it.

FWIW I think Lorelei is a lovely name.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/11/2021 13:46

I do like Delilah. My hesitation would be people singing the songs at her all the time.

I'm not a fan of Lorelai.

chouxfleur · 01/11/2021 13:55

Tom Jones' song Delilah is about a bloke murdering a woman for, what he perceives as, messing around with other men!

It's not a nice song!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/11/2021 18:27

Delilah is quite trendy now but has a really pretty sound so would be my pick. I'm not so keen on the way Lorelei sounds, sorry.

RosyTea · 02/11/2021 12:52

Delilah - it's nice you have a sentimental meaning for it too

JudgementalCactus · 02/11/2021 12:57

Delilah if it must be one of these two.
But I like Dahlia much better than Delilah.

Cornettoninja · 02/11/2021 13:43

The Plain White T-Shirts song is lovely though.

But I like Dahlia much better than Delilah

Might just be me but I think the name Dahlia is associated with the Black Dahlia murder which has notoriety in the true crime genre. It’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear it.
