The Irish names Samhradán and Somhairle (from Norse) have been used as boys names. There's a Saint Samthann, abbess of Clonbroney monastery.
"Samhain" with that spelling has not been used iiuc.
Fun fact: in Afghanistan they make wheat porridge they call "samanak" for a festival but I can't remember the date, not end of harvest.

Only 1% of the world's population will know how to pronounce it

That many? 1/100? There are 60 million in the uk and I’d think you were lucky if 60 people largely English speaking people got the pronunciation correct.

3luckystars · 29/10/2021 22:12

I would pronounce it ‘Sow Enn’

I don’t think it’s a nice name for a person, no. Is the baby due around now?

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 22:13

@LizzieAnt

No, it's not usable imo. It was Sam-Hayne on Scooby -Doo too, I remember being very surprised by that as a child Grin

I wouldn't call a child Lugh (Loo) either, I think, TuftyMarmoset. It's not so bad as a short version of Louis or something, but on it's own, I don't think I would.

Doh I didn't even make the loo connection, even though it's what I always say, as was thinking of Lou - clearly got the German hat on too tight tonight!

Oh and "samh" is Irish for summer.
"Samhán" would mean "summer one".
"Sámhán" would mean "calm one".
"Sadhbh" is similarish.

AuntDympna · 29/10/2021 22:32

Samanak is made for Nowroz, the spring equinox which is Persian New Year, and Saman is a fairly popular Persian name meaning "calm".

I'd think you were Pagan if you called your child that - not an issue in itself but it would be odd if child when older chose a different kind of lifestyle (like being an accountant).

It is the name of a character in the most recent Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rolling) book, Troubled Blood, from quite an odd (and troubled!) family.
