@Forumsforfun

I'm disappointed by the response as I thought it would be on the same level as valentine
No it's like calling your kid Easter or Diwali
Thepennysjustdropped · 29/10/2021 18:38

Why mess about? Just call him Halloween.

Seriously, no.

Damien?

Valentine is the saint, not the festival.

There’s a St Wolfgang who has his feast day on 31 October. Wolfie?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/10/2021 18:39

The band Samhain call themselves Sam Hain and I believe it was Sam Hain on Buffy too. Barbarians the lot of them.

It's definitely not useable as a name, OP. Only 1% of the world's population will know how to pronounce it. Also, it's not a name.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 18:40

@DotDotDotDotDot

To be honest any thread that starts “is this name usable?”, the answer is almost always no!
Exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title. And it is no in this case too!

OP most people won’t know how to pronounce it nor will they know what it means anyway. If you want a pagan name what about Lugh?

NeverTrustaRabbit · 29/10/2021 18:40

I kinda like it, I wouldn't pick it but if I heard it I wouldn't think it was awful. My concern would be that no- one would ever pronounce it properly.

On a similar theme gave you considered Mahon or Alban.....

DaisyWaldron · 29/10/2021 18:41

@Lulu1919 it's pronounced more like sow-in with the "sow" being the pronunciation meaning female pig rather than scattering seeds.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 18:42

@Lulu1919

Is it Sam - hayne ?
No it’s like sow-in
Twizbe · 29/10/2021 18:43

@KingsleyShacklebolt

No, don't be ridiculous.

Would you call a child Halloween? or Harvest?

I know a woman called Harvest ...
dopenguinsdance · 29/10/2021 19:05

My birthday is 31 October and I'm so glad my parents weren't of the same mind as you. Valentine is a Christian saint, Samhain is the Celtic/Pagan end of summer/harvest festival. They're really not comparable.

ofwarren · 29/10/2021 19:07

🤣
Sorry, it's really really bad OP

OakPine · 29/10/2021 19:12

Give me strength! Just call your child a normal name, a human name that other people have.
Always makes me laugh when people think they are being so unique calling their child after a slebrity and then you find out there are another 4 in their primary class with the same name!
Poor child.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2021 19:15

My cat is called 'George' short for 'mad king who lost America'

cushioncovers · 29/10/2021 19:19

How on earth do you pronounce it?

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/10/2021 19:20

No its ridiculous sorry

Jasmine11 · 29/10/2021 19:22

@cushioncovers

How on earth do you pronounce it?
Along the lines of 'Soween' but most people would just say 'Sam Hain' Sorry OP it's a terrible idea. How about something like Sylvan instead?
dopenguinsdance · 29/10/2021 19:22

Sow-in. 'Sow' is pronounced as in female pig. In American tv shows, the actors always mispronounce it as Sam- Hayne.

SweetPetrichor · 29/10/2021 19:34

No way. A) it’s not a name, and b) most people wouldn’t be able to pronounce it!

DariaMorgendorffer · 29/10/2021 19:45

Absolutely not.

LittleDandelionClock · 29/10/2021 19:47

NO.

FindingMeno · 29/10/2021 19:48

I like it but the pronunciation issues would get tiring very quickly.

missymousey · 29/10/2021 20:16

No

scottishnames · 29/10/2021 20:21

Sow-whanh or Sow-whinn. The feast of the dead etc. The origin of Halloween, but much more serious.

Thebookswereherfriends · 29/10/2021 20:25

If you like the way it sounds then why not “Owen”?

LizzieAnt · 29/10/2021 21:23

No, it's not usable imo.
It was Sam-Hayne on Scooby -Doo too, I remember being very surprised by that as a child Grin

I wouldn't call a child Lugh (Loo) either, I think, TuftyMarmoset. It's not so bad as a short version of Louis or something, but on it's own, I don't think I would.
