Too Schitts Creek?
DP and I have been discussing Moira to add to the Shirley, Doris and Prunella list.

I rather love it, but will everyone immediately think of Schitts Creek. I will get very bored of constantly explaining she's not named after Moira Rose!

@Namechangedforthethousandthtim

Dorcas is NOT lovely 😂 is it pronounced like Dork-uss? I normally love a biblical name, but Dorcas is right up there with Prunella and Doris in the horrible name list. How about Tabitha - the translation of Dorcas?
Dorcas is absolutely hideous. Breathtakingly so. Just like Prunella.
celestebellman · 20/10/2021 12:48

Moira has a nice enough sound - a zillion times nicer than Doris, which has no redeeming aspects at all, but still has a very unglamorous middle aged vibe.
At least Prunella could go by Nell/Nellie
What about Maura - similar but much nicer and easier to imagine on a younger person. Also Morna (Scottish name) and Morven both nice.

I'd say it more as Dor-kas. It's the name of a friend's DD. Tabitha is too kitteny for my taste

I've never seen Schitts Creek so I'd probably assumed she was named after your Scottish granny. That said, I'm in Scotland and I've never met a Moira under the age of mid 40's.
I think it's dated and not in a trendy way but it's better than your other options and Dorcas is a horrendous suggestion!

CoronaPeroni · 20/10/2021 13:13

All your names are not due a comeback JUST yet imoGrin
I think Moira was a snotty prefect at Malory Towers so on that basis it's a no from me

weegiemum · 20/10/2021 13:32

We considered it for dd1 who is now 21.

We used Morna as a middle name instead.

Maireas · 20/10/2021 13:59

Morna sounds too much like mourning. Bit sad. Moira is brighter and sharper.

Fabuleuse · 20/10/2021 14:09

Moira was my actual Scottish granny's name so I do like it for the association with her, but to put it in context she would be 106 if she was still alive.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/10/2021 14:43

I think you should take that Doris determination and make your mark with Gertie or Bertha. (Provided it's a pet you're naming).

whatausername · 20/10/2021 14:48

I met a Moira about two weeks ago! She was in her 20s and immediately after introducing herself cracked a joke about how awkward and dated her name was. I did privately wonder if she felt embarrassed by it because the joke was almost like it was part of her introduction. She did the same with the next person to join our group. She, however, was sweet, friendly and seemed confident otherwise.

ClaraBean · 20/10/2021 15:07

@lottiegarbanzo not a pet! A real human baby. Doris is really dp's input, Shirley is my favourite and Moira is one we both love. Prunella was also dp, as he likes Pru, I am not so keen.
It could still be a boy, of course and then this will become a non issue!
I think realistically, unless dp comes round to any of my other suggestions its between Moira and Shirley.

Classica · 20/10/2021 16:15

Dare I ask what the name's on the boy's list are?

I have a feeling it's not going to be Harry or Jack.

ClaraBean · 20/10/2021 16:32

@Classica we find boys names pretty easy. I did a post on them a while back so we are choosing between Seymour, Desmond and Eugene. I also like Raymond and Howard but dp not keen on either of those.
We both love Morris but my 14 year old is called Amos so the could both end up being Mossy so that one is out!

Classica · 20/10/2021 16:39

I would say your boys' names seem less startling. I quite like Seymour but the Seymour Butts jokes would be never ending!

PetticoatSoldier · 20/10/2021 16:43

A good old fashioned Scottish name, I love it Smile

Kyoshi · 21/10/2021 23:52

I would be honoured to be named after Moira Rose!

But seriously, I’m reeeally not usually into this sort of name. However, over the years Moira has grown on me tremendously! Smile

TuftyMarmoset · 21/10/2021 23:57

I have seen some of Schitts Creek but didn’t think of that. It makes me imagine some ancient great aunt. It’s much, much better than Shirley, Doris and Prunella though. I really do think Doris or Prunella would be cruel.

TuftyMarmoset · 21/10/2021 23:57

Eugene would also be cruel

Snoopsnoggysnog · 22/10/2021 00:28

Dorcas is really really not nice

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/10/2021 00:33

Village in Northern Ireland with an excellent butcher and deli.

cafedesreves · 22/10/2021 22:20

Goodness!!

Quite an acquired taste some of those names...!

I'm not keen on Moira, sorry.

peaceinourtime · 23/10/2021 08:21

Dorcas a big no. Eugene which can be shorted to Gene is nice.

thewhatsit · 23/10/2021 08:44

If I were going for a vintage but not coming back into fashion name I’d go for something like Judith (Judy).

sunglassesonthetable · 24/10/2021 08:47

I went to school briefly with someone called Dorcas Podger .

Yes.

That name has never left me.
