Thoughts on name Ishbel?

Freya2456 · 20/09/2021 09:44

Couldn’t find much threads on this name. We have Scottish heritage on my mums side. I am quite fond of “belle” names but think Isabel is too common.

Have never known an Ishbel only heard of the name. Be good to get some opinions on it!

Ishbel is a lovely name. However, I am Scottish, living in Scotland. I am surprised to see the responses from non-Scots, but there you have it.

NuffSaidSam · 20/09/2021 13:31

I think it sounds like a drunk person saying Isobel too.

msssm · 20/09/2021 13:38

I think it's a beautiful name. I know an adult Ishbel and she's lovely.

Again could be biased as Scottish living in Scotland but have only ever known that one.

Firepitnights · 20/09/2021 13:41

Grew up in Wales with an Ishbel. Beautiful name!

JaninaDuszejko · 20/09/2021 13:55

If you want to recognise your Scottish heritage then Ishbel or Isobel is lovely. Isabel is the Spanish version of Elizabeth so don't use that.

Other Scottish names you might like:
Morag, Fiona, Shona, Jean, Isla, Eilidh, Lesley, Skye, Elspeth, Mhairi, Kirsten, Robina, Greer, Innes.

Synchrony · 20/09/2021 14:05

I think it's fine. I don't know any, but am familiar with it because of Trebizon too.

Chunkymenrock · 20/09/2021 14:07

It's OK but does sound like someone sneezing!

TheVolturi · 20/09/2021 14:08

I don't think it's a name?

Draggondragon · 20/09/2021 14:11

It sounds made up and naff. Sorry but it's dreadful.

NerdyBird · 20/09/2021 14:11

Tish from Trebizon was my first thought! I like but I do think she'll spend a lot of time explaining her name.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 20/09/2021 14:18

Can’t say it’s my favourite Scottish name.
I like Eilidh, Fiona, Kirsty, Mhairi

Not keen on Isobel either for some reason. But honestly if you like it, go for it. It also doesn’t sound made up or naff? Unlike all these weird spelling actual made up names you get now

Palavah · 20/09/2021 14:25

The small-mindedness I hear on this board never ceases to amaze me.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/09/2021 14:29

@TheVolturi @Draggondragon

Well considering how many of us Scots on this thread have said how many we know IRL and what a nice name it is maybe you should listen to them instead of blithely making an ignorant comment that shows you haven't bothered to read the thread.

SirChenjins · 20/09/2021 14:32

I live in Scotland and it’s one of the Scottish names I actively dislike - similar to Senga, Morven, Morag, Dolina, etc. It really does sound like someone drunk trying to say Isobel.

Enko · 20/09/2021 14:37

I quite like it.

Also like Isabis

midsomermurderess · 20/09/2021 15:18

NZ has quite strong Scottish connections doesn't it? These threads always attract what I read as not very well-educated, not well-travelled little women lIving in mean new-builds in the English midlands, living in terror of what the neighbours think. Why would you be influenced by them?

TatianaBis · 20/09/2021 15:18

I don't think it works outside Scotland as it's not sufficiently well known - endless mishearing and jokes.

Or women who live in the actual country the name originates from who just don't like it.
AhhWoof · 20/09/2021 15:27

Love it. Have also stayed at a place called Finca Ixobel which was pronounced the same!

steppemum · 20/09/2021 15:30

It sound to me like Ishmael, not like Isobel.

Hmm, not sure really unless you have strong scottish links.

Maggiesgirl · 20/09/2021 15:36

What about one of the Islands names instead.

Skye
Rona
Eriskay (friends daughter is known as Eri)
Iona
Canna
Jura

Oh I wish my laptop had a crying laughing emoji!

I speak 5 languages and have lived overseas for many years.

I am allowed an opinion on a name. I don't like it.

That doesn't make me small minded. it means I have an opinion!

If you wanted to really let everyone know you have Scottish heritage then go for one few will be able to pronounce like Gigha, Erraid, Seil, Wiay, that sort of thing. Or really push out the boat and go Gaelic.
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2021 15:45

@HoldingTheDoor

Call me Ishbel...

That's the first thing that came to mind.(Yes, I know it's Ishmael)
