Thoughts on name Ishbel?

Freya2456 · 20/09/2021 09:44

Couldn’t find much threads on this name. We have Scottish heritage on my mums side. I am quite fond of “belle” names but think Isabel is too common.

Have never known an Ishbel only heard of the name. Be good to get some opinions on it!

Poor child would spend her whole life explaining to people that it is not a spelling mistake ..:(

CoronaPeroni · 21/09/2021 10:48

I went to school with an Ishbel. Cover teachers doing the register would invariably read it as Ishabel. In fact we used to wait for it and Ishbel would grin and decide whether to answer or not.

Freya2456 · 21/09/2021 11:33

Yes we love Isobel too but it is too common for us and I also hate the nickname Izzy….

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 11:40

Izzy is better than Pishy, might be a Glasgow thing but still a no from me.

Bumbers · 21/09/2021 11:44

I worked with an Ishbel and no one had any issues with it!

TheSandgroper · 21/09/2021 13:48

I’m in Aus. There was an Ishbel around town as I was growing up (parent generation).

It works just fine. I’m a fan.

RiotAtTheRodeo · 21/09/2021 13:59

I know a couple of Ishbels, surprised it's had such a reaction on this thread. I think it's a nice name if not to my own personal taste.

Elspeth is the Scottish name that I have a visceral reaction to. Just hate it. I must have been gravely wronged by an Elspeth in a previous life! Grin

RiotAtTheRodeo · 21/09/2021 14:01

@ChessieFL

I like it, but everyone will think it’s Isabel spelt/pronounced wrongly.

There’s an Ishbel in the Trebizon boarding school books, known as Tish. That’s the only place I’ve come across this name!

Oh what a flashback! Used to love the Trebizon series.

I don't think it's a name?

Yesterday 14:11Draggondragon

It sounds made up and naff. Sorry but it's dreadful.

It's perfectly acceptable to not like a name and to say so on these threads but these two comments were right next to each other and are the reason people are talking about stupid and ignorant comments. It is a name and it's not made up FFS. I don't like the name Stephanie but still know it's a real name.

I've honestly never heard of the name before either.

In which case why not look it up before you rudely claim it’s invented .

I like it but only as a boy's name. As pp's have said, people would think It Isabel for a girl..it strikes me as a very 19th century name for some reason.

Theriband · 21/09/2021 15:58

@CloseYourEyesAndSee

It's awful! Sounds like someone trying to say isobel whilst pissed Sorry - it might sound nice in a highlands accent but otherwise no
Charming!
HeadNorth · 21/09/2021 16:40

I like it but only as a boy's name.

What a strange comment, it is a girl's name. That is like saying 'I like Belinda, but only as a boy's name'. Odd.

It's definitely a girls name, gaelic form of Isobel.

Op you could use Isobel rather than Isabel.

balernobetty · 21/09/2021 16:46

I went to school with one in the 80's and it was considered very old fashioned then.

I was wondering if they were getting muddled up with Ishmael?

Although there was recently a poster who was insisting that they wanted to use Cecily for a boy and another that insisted that Esme was only acceptable as a male name. It's a weird place here, oftentimes.

Stuckinstressville · 21/09/2021 16:54

My 21 yr old cool and hip stunning 6ft Aussie niece is Ishbel- and it’s great, strong and different yet say what you see spelling- she loves it and when I just asked said go for it - it makes her stand out and she loves it.

OuiOuiBonjour · 21/09/2021 16:58

Oh and in Fife we usually use Isa (eyes-uh) as a nickname for Isobel instead of Izzy. English friends use Tizz. Pish (Scot's equivalent of Piss) is a mean but often used nickname for Ishbels but I'm guessing New Zealanders don't say Pish?

As I've already pointed out, in my Scots dialect we don't say "ish-bell" but "ISH-bul" so Belle wouldn't work as a nickname.

What do you think of;

Christabel (Emmeline Pankhurst's daughter's name)
Anabel/ Annabelle
Mirabel
Amabel
Arabella
Mabel
Maribel
Rosabel
Gabrielle
Sybil

?

Velvetbee · 21/09/2021 17:00

I like it.

rubyandbel · 21/09/2021 17:00

I automatically think of an orthodox Jewish name.

thenewduchessofhastings · 21/09/2021 17:01

It's lovely, you'll have people mispronouncing it but then again I have a fairly common name that gets mispronounced anyway so Yohan know what?;if you love the name use it.

I love some of the less commonly used Scottish names such as Greer and loaghaire

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 17:04

@OuiOuiBonjour you've answered something that has bugged me for years what is Isa short for, Isabel never crossed my mind.

Yes it might work where pish, isn't used.

We've an elderly Isadora who is also an Isa locally so it works for that (and Isabella too).
