I prefer Lois.

Parker231 · 16/09/2021 10:13

My friend has a Lois, Alice and Rose - all lovely names

GogLais · 16/09/2021 10:33

@MrsFin, there aren't 2.5m Welsh speakers. The figure is about a third of that.

It is pronounced Loyce by Welsh speakers but Lo-is by English speakers.

I prefer the Welsh way of saying it , as it sounds stronger, but both are nice

sprinkleyumnut · 16/09/2021 10:34

Alice

I'm aware of that. I said Welsh people, not Welsh speakers.

CharlieBoo · 16/09/2021 22:42

Love them both…. Can’t go wrong with either x

surreygirl1987 · 16/09/2021 22:46

I absolutely love the name Alice. Always reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, and has a sense of wonderful childhood nostalgia about it.

Comedycook · 16/09/2021 22:47

@Heruka

Lois - cool, classy, interesting. Alice - boring, twee, simpering.

Sorry that was a bit brutal

Exactly this!
Miliao · 16/09/2021 23:54

Alice - classy, classic, beautiful
Lois - chavy, common, brash

Isn’t this a fun game Grin

tickledtiger · 17/09/2021 00:00

I would choose Alice because I dislike Family Guy, also the Welsh/English pronunciation of Lois is quite different and be thinking she’d have to correct people.

Kitkat151 · 17/09/2021 00:03

Definately not Lois

Looktotheright · 17/09/2021 00:14

Like either
Alice has good personal associations for me as have friends with the name. Also loved Alice in Wonderland

I don’t know anyone called Lois. I only associate with Lois Lane, not a bad thing in itself. I would instinctively say it Low-iss but the other sounds nice as well.

I knew an odd Lois and it's spoilt the name for me. I was shocked when I saw on MN everyone liking it, but I supoose it is quite nice and in hindsight I'm just associating it with the Lois I knew.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 17/09/2021 08:58

Like both! Only thing with Lois is that people might not familiar with it might pronounce is as L-oi-s

namechange465987 · 17/09/2021 09:05

Lois.

As pp, Low-iss.

Alice too popular now and just too sweet and twee for my liking (often on a screaming misbehaved child, which just accentuates the ill-fitting overly saccharine name unfortunately).

Holly60 · 17/09/2021 09:12

@LowbrowVictoriana

Lois.

Alice is dull.

Lois is ugly and common
LowbrowVictoriana · 17/09/2021 11:42

Whoaa... way to get defensive, @Holly60!!HmmGrin

OP asked for opinions. That was mine.

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 17/09/2021 12:44

Alice.

I really dislike Lois, it also just reminds me of Family Guy.

adeleh · 17/09/2021 12:45

Alice - beautiful, elegant and good for a little girl and an adult.

Spidey66 · 17/09/2021 12:48

Both lovely. Lois has the edge for me because it is less common but both are great names.

Lunificent · 17/09/2021 12:55

Alice for me. Lois is very current.

Florencenotflo · 17/09/2021 12:59

I have a 2 year old Lois. So I love the name 😂

It wasn't on our list at all though until she was born. I only knew one Lois and I never really associated the name with Lois Lane, it was a bit before my time to be honest.

DH has 2 Welsh Aunts who both pronounced it 'Loyce' but do tend to say Low-is now.

I also like Alice.

So my reply didn't help you in the slightest! 😂😂😂

BiBabbles · 17/09/2021 13:10

Lois, mostly because I prefer the sound of either pronunication, the meaning, and history, but I'll admit my bias from having a strong negative association with Alice even though that person ended up changing her name because she hated the name so much.

Balonzette I've same the same bafflement for Alice, I know it my own bias from knowing a vile violent person with the name and I guess it sounds alright, but it still confuses me how popular it is because that association is so strong for me.

Fivefourthreetwo · 17/09/2021 13:32
