I love this name for a boy. But on Google searching about the name, it seems its now very popular as a girls name!

My question is, is Aubrey a gender neutral name, or will it soon be seen as a girls name??

If so, what other names might I like??

I think of it as a girls name but I watched a lot of Teen Mom a few years back

It's a version of Oberon, a centuries-old name for the king of the elves (as in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream).

Oberon is itself a version of the even older Germanic name, Alberic/Alberich. The Anglo-Saxon/early middle ages equivalents were Aelfric or Elric.

Yet another version is Auberon, as in Auberon Waugh, the famous 20th cent novelist.

It literally means 'elf-king' and that makes it a male name to me.

Great knowledge! I feel really sad when lovely male names get appropriated for girls to the exclusion of using them for boys and many people don't even realise that they were originally male. I'm all for unisex names though

It's a boys name for sure though I think in the last 10-20 years it has been used as a mainly American girls name. I think most people when they hear it think of it as a boys name.

More girls names Aubrey than boys in Scotland in the past few years

Drake's real name is Aubrey and he is a boy.

DappledThings · 17/09/2021 23:38

It's a boy's name. As silly on a girl as James is.

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

I automatically think of Boyce from Only Fools and Horses but that’s my generation, apart from that it sounds bit staid to my ears.
That's what I came on to say. Makes me think of Boycie and the seance scene from OFAH

Personally I only picture it on a girl but it is definitely a unisex name

Leeloo1233 · 18/09/2021 06:45

Definitely a girl's name in my opinion

But objectively it isn’t. It’s an extremely old male name that has only very recently started being used for girls by people who don’t know that.

Well d's and his girlfriend new it was a really old male name when they used it for their dd. They've never met a male one though. Think it was in the top 50 girls names the year dgd was born

I just looked at Aubrey on the first couple of pages of Scotland's People and it shows a female Aubrey from 1931 so not that recent.

I love Audrey for a girl, much nicer imo

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/09/2021 10:49

I’ve only known female Aubreys. There’s a relatively famous one from Teen Mom (she must be a teen herself now!)
