I'm desperate at picking names! Can someone please help me with original, not really popular Irish names! We don't know the gender, but I'm struggling more with girls names 🙈🙈

Adhemar
Liadan
Sorcha

IHateCoronavirus · 18/08/2021 21:40

I know a Sinead who is lovely and so much fun to be around.

CliffsofMohair · 18/08/2021 21:43

Oh Clodagh is definitely having a revival round these parts.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 18/08/2021 21:44

Oisin

What about Fíadh?

Some Irish names can sound quite vintage and boring but I think Fíadh is beautiful
(Pronounced fee-ah)

SionnachRua · 18/08/2021 21:52

Ah jaysus, Aoine is like those memes about South Dublin mummies and their precious little Sneachta and Ispíní. You couldn't do that to a child.

Cliodhna
Muireann
Doireann
Fiona
Fionnuala
Dearbhla
Síle
Nessa
Ailbhe
Cáit
Éilis
Moya
Nollaig
Brigid
Aedamar
Tailte
Béibhínn
Bláthnaid

... personally I don't know any little girls named these (so not Fiadh, Niamh, Orla, Aoife etc). Now I don't love all of these names but you might!

Atla · 18/08/2021 21:52

I know a wee girl called Fóla, which I like a lot. Thinking of my daughter's class there is a Fiadh, Róise, Niamh, Eibhlin, Muireann.

Boys of my aquaintance - Ciuin, Donnacha, Oisín, Lorcan, Ronan, Aidan/Aodhan. I always liked Faolan but dh vetoed it.

Fiadh is extremely popular at the moment, it will date. Nice name in and of itself but not what OP wants.

Anoisagusaris · 18/08/2021 22:02

Melina isn’t an Irish name is it??

Apologies in advance for lack of fadas - I like Roise, Realtin, Clodagh, Bronagh, Ceola and Laoise.

I love cliodhna! And have for a few years. Hubby keeps saying no. But I keep working on it 😂 so far the only girls name we agree on is Meabh. But It was an option for our middle child so I feel like baby will get the leftover name 😂 as for boys names we can't agree on any! Fiadh and Aoife are both so popular here now! Both pretty names. But yes ones I'll avoid for that reason

In the past two months alone I've heard of 3 clodaghs 🙈

I wanted to call DD Orchil but DP vetoed it.

Lipsandlashes · 18/08/2021 22:10

I’ve got two DDs with more common Irish names but I do love the name Sadhbh (pronounced ’Sive’). DH vetoed it though because we live in England and the Gaelic spelling would have been too much.
I love Cillian for a boy.

custardbear · 18/08/2021 22:21

Phelan
Tadhg

Are my favourite boys names

Saoirsa
Cliodhna

I like for girls

RedLemon · 18/08/2021 22:35

I love Sadhbh, Fiadh (popularity be damned), Muireann, Lasairfhiona (lasREEona ), Róisín, Saerlaith, Eibhlín.

Aedammar (Various different spellings) is beautiful too.

Doireann is lovely but I find it hard to get past the meaning (“sullen”).

TerribleCustomerCervix · 18/08/2021 22:53

We have a Sadhbh and I still think it’s the best name ever.

We’re in NI where it’s not popular- we were in the museum and me and another mother shouted “Sadhbh!” at the same time for our DD’s and we smugly smiled at each other at our shared excellent taste Grin

LowlytheWorm · 18/08/2021 22:57

Sive? As in Sieve? Or to rhyme with jive?

Something like Sinead is lovely and classic and even though it’s an S name it’s a Shhh sound so might work with your surname.

Lipsandlashes · 19/08/2021 08:24

As in five with an S

Greek

Disneycharacter · 19/08/2021 10:04

My brothers middle name is Keryl. No idea how it's spelt as he hates it.

GallowwayGirl88 · 19/08/2021 11:29

Correct!

I have two great aunties with the name and always include it in Irish names when I think of them Blush my mistake.

daisyducky · 19/08/2021 11:50

I considered dara but for a girl

packingupandmovingon · 19/08/2021 11:57

I love Clíodhna and Clodagh (I have cousins called both of these and both are stunning women so I kind of associate the names with that).

I've never actually met one but I quite like Labhaoise.

Seanchailleach · 20/08/2021 13:01

Aoine as in fasting? Interesting name for a person...

Fun translation:
Dé hAoine =Friday = "fast day"
Dé Céadaoin =Wednesday = "day of first fast"
Déardaoin (Dé idir dá Aoine) = Thursday = "day between two fasts"

Apparently Irish monks went in for the 5:2 diet....

CliffsofMohair · 20/08/2021 13:35

Oh @Seanchailleach I had no idea what’s what the days of the week meant 😂
