Hello I am down to two girls names Grace and Alice. I like the traditional classic names and I know both are quite popular but I will be choosing one of these, just struggling to decide between them. Which one would you pick? Thanks x

Alice. No reason, just like it better

I’d pick Alice because Grace is very popular in our area. But they are both lovely names and either would be a great choice.

Pick the one that sounds nicest with the surname.
I much prefer Alice.

Grace

Alice, but both are lovely.

sykadelic · 16/08/2021 15:31

Are initials an issue?

Alice can be shortened to Ali which is good imo. However does remind me of Alice in Wonderland (should she be a daydreamer) and Alice, Alice, who the F is Alice.

Grace is my MILs name. Everything with "Grace" in it is about her. Amazing Grace. Full of Grace etc etc

Amz6219 · 16/08/2021 15:32

I slightly prefer Alice, but like Alice Grace as full name (i.e. Grace as middle name) - is lovely :)

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/08/2021 15:45

Alice is much more timeless sounding, which helps transcend it's popularity imo, so would be my pick of the two. It's an Elizabeth, Catherine sort of name - has it's definite peaks but always feels fairly well used historically.

While Grace could be a classic too (though not as timelessly popular as Alice was), the problem is not just it's current popularity as a first name - it's that because of the multitude of girls that have it as their middle name too, it's become an almost ubiquitous "2000/2010's" name imo.

You want a traditional "classic" name and I think Grace will date her more. Think about how popular Claire was as a first and middle name in the 1970's/80's - similarly short and pretty and had been used in smaller numbers for a long time, but now considered somewhat dated to that time period because of overuse.

labradorsandgin · 16/08/2021 15:49

Alice. It is just the most beautiful girls name. Can't beat it.

Thatsnotmypolarbear · 16/08/2021 15:50

Alice is lovely - reminds me of Alice in wonderland. I find Grace really dull. And what if she's not graceful? It also seems to be the go-to middle name, along with Rose and May, so just feels very tired and overused to me.

Notaroadrunner · 16/08/2021 15:53

Grace.

MrsBertBibby · 16/08/2021 16:14

Grace. Alice sounds very smug and self satisfied to me.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 16/08/2021 16:15

Grace but they are both lovely.

Itsbeen84yearss · 16/08/2021 16:17

I know a brilliant little Alice. I would go with that.

Greystray · 16/08/2021 16:45

I like Grace. It is often a place filler middle name like Mae and Jane, but as it's own name it's lovely.

My main associations with Alice are that awful Roy Chubby Brown song, and the Disney film with the almost equally annoying main voice actress. Whereas Grace mostly reminds me of Grace Kelly. But you can't name your child based on every random's own personal associations!

overtherainbo · 16/08/2021 16:59

Alice. I think it's lovely

Aorh · 16/08/2021 19:11

Alice

Scarby9 · 16/08/2021 19:11

Grace. Love it.

Cam2020 · 16/08/2021 19:27

Alice for me but they're both lovely and can't go wrong with either!

Redwinestillfine · 16/08/2021 19:28

Grace, Alice is lovely but I know loads.

Figgygal · 16/08/2021 19:29

If I’d had a girl Alice was one of my names that I loved

Woolver23 · 16/08/2021 19:31

I prefer Grace but it's very frequently used
