Baby name dilemma!

I'm now approaching the end of my pregnancy (scary stuff!) and we are still unsure about a name for our little man.

We are stuck between:
Arthur John Cross
George John Cross

I don't think any of those initials will cause problems but I'm not sure if George John flows (not that you say the middle name often). We can't change the middle name as that is a family tradition.

Also there is the George cross award 🤣

Help?

Both lovely but Arthur has the edge 🥰

daisypond · 25/07/2021 13:35

George is a better name but I wouldn’t have George Cross as a name. So, Arthur.

Theoldwoman · 25/07/2021 13:49

I like George, but to me Arthur screams old man.

But if you must use John, then George doesn't really go.

piglet81 · 25/07/2021 13:51

Is Cross the surname or a second middle name? Please don’t call him George Cross!

MrsGilly1 · 25/07/2021 15:33

I prefer George but you could break it up having 2 middle names such as..

George William John Cross etc X

Noshowwithoutpunch · 25/07/2021 15:35

Arthur.
Don't like George and John together.

DoucheCanoe · 25/07/2021 15:36

I prefer George but not with John or Cross!

Sally872 · 25/07/2021 15:39

Both nice names but I would also avoid George Cross, so Arthur John Cross is my preference. With another surname I would struggle to choose between them.

DoucheCanoe · 25/07/2021 15:44

Also - true crime fascinates me and I'm pretty sure there's a serial killer called Arthur Cross (in living memory) if that bothers you.

Wouldn't bother me but I know it might put some off!

DoucheCanoe · 25/07/2021 15:46

Nevermind - it's Shawcross 🤦‍♀️

NuffSaidSam · 25/07/2021 15:59

You can't call him George Cross! George is a lovely name, but with that surname you have to go Arthur.

Also, avoid Victoria for a DD!

I prefer George to Arthur but I dont think George Cross is a good choice. George also doesnt flow with John although middle names arent used much day day to day so that probably doesnt matter so much.

So on balance I'd go for Arthur

Namechangeforthisquestion7 · 25/07/2021 16:40

OP in case you are confused by the comments and haven't realised, the George Cross is a medal awarded for bravery, e.g. to the armed services.
So for that reason I'd go for Arthur. But if you particularly like the name George then perhaps John George Cross? Middle names are hardly ever used so the other meaning matters less for a middle name.

DoucheCanoe · 25/07/2021 16:42

@Namechangeforthisquestion7 the OP mentioned the award in her first post Grin

TenThousandSpoons · 25/07/2021 16:43

Arthur. You can’t call him George Cross.

Namechangeforthisquestion7 · 25/07/2021 17:05

@DoucheCanoe I didn't read to the end of the original post and jumped in with my response 🤦🏻‍♀️ Classic mumsnet failure.

EssentialHummus · 25/07/2021 17:09

Arthur. You can’t call him George Cross.

This.

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2021 17:11

I prefer Arthur

Startimestwo · 25/07/2021 17:12

Another vote for Arthur

user1493494961 · 25/07/2021 17:28

A big 'no' to George Cross, I can't believe you're contemplating it.

Summertime21 · 25/07/2021 17:42

I prefer George as a name but you cannot name a child George cross

Smushty14 · 25/07/2021 18:13

Just to clarify, Cross is the surname and John is the middle name ☺️

I can see a lot of people are anti George, out of interest why? I know it is the highest award out there but not quite sure why the negativity on it - could just be me being ignorant though!!

As me and my darling partner aren't married or engaged (after many moons together) we will be double barrelling the surname which is why we don't want two middle names or the poor child will have five names until the point we are married it will be hard for little one to spell them all! But as my surname is disappearing I haven't added it to the post ☺️

Thanks for everyone's input so far! Much appreciated!!!

I don’t think anyone has negative associations with the George Cross, it’s just naming a child after a known thing is normally to be avoided. Ie if your surname was Hoover and you suggested Henry, you’d get the same response. It sounds jokey even if not meant that way.

UndeadSlut · 25/07/2021 18:52

I never used to like Arthur until I met a lovely little 6 year old with the name. It suits him down to the ground and I'm now quite sold on it! I prefer it to George even without the surname issue you have.
