Murdo and Torin

Hi everyone, I’m currently pregnant and struggling a bit with boys’ names this time.

What does everyone think of Murdo and Torin?

I was surprised when my family all really liked Murdo! We’re Scottish and the surname will be a Scottish one, if that matters. I’m not sure how well it ‘goes’ with DS’s name though, which is a very soft name with mainly vowel sounds (not Scottish), or if I even care whether they go in the first place. Is it too Scottish though?! We don’t live in Scotland atm.

I read that Torin is Irish and have added it to The List.

Thanks

Murdo is great! As are all the names on @Puffalicious’s list.

Laureatus · 12/07/2021 00:48

Murdo is great (I'm Scottish). Hector as an alternative?!

BonnieLisbon · 12/07/2021 01:08

Think there might have been a character called Murdo in a Kate Atkinson book. I like puffalicious' list

Awrite · 12/07/2021 01:17

I like Murdo.

Torin is ok. What about Cormac if you like Irish names?

I went to school with a Magnus (in Scotland). Always liked that name.

Ýy to Struan.

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 12/07/2021 01:24

I absolutely love Struan

douliket · 12/07/2021 01:34

Tavannach · 12/07/2021 01:57

I like Murdo.
Torin's okay, but a little bit soft, iykwim. I thought it was Welsh.

BashStreet1 · 12/07/2021 03:25

Really like Torin.

Don't like Murdo though- sounds too much like murder.

Really like innes and Keir from a pp's list.

giggly · 12/07/2021 03:34

Torin is fine

TatianaBis · 12/07/2021 11:08

Don’t like Murdo, love Sholto

TatianaBis · 12/07/2021 11:10

And Oisín/Ossian - Irish/Scotts

Puffalicious · 12/07/2021 11:12

@Anythingelseintheboxpandora

I absolutely love Struan
He's one of mine. 14 and a complete pita at the moment Grin but it's still my favourite name ever!

I have 2 other boys and I love their Scottish names. But if I had my time over again I'd use Nairn and Innes.

Morred · 12/07/2021 11:12

Hamish and Hector are both very Scottish names - I prefer either of those to Murdo or Mungo. Torin/Thorin/Torben are also all good.

Alec is another v Scottish name I like.

Puffalicious · 12/07/2021 11:13

Forgot about Arran. My niece has just had an Arran 2 weeks ago!

Puffalicious · 12/07/2021 11:15

douliket that list is lovely. Some I'd not heard of. I 💚Cillian- my friend has one of those (she's Irish).

PineappleTart · 12/07/2021 11:18

I love Murdo but maybe that's because I'm Scottish and have known a few

Cowbells · 12/07/2021 11:26

Not at all keen on Murdo because of similarity to murder.

Torin is OK. But the two Torins I've met are very pale and frail looking so I associate the name with that.

Scottish and Irish boys names are the best! You have so many to choose from.
I love Ruaridh. What about Sholto? Hamish?

boniobiscuit · 12/07/2021 11:37

I've never met a Murdo that I didn't like and absolutely love the name. I've known a couple who went by their pet name of Dodo too.

If you love it use it Smile

mistermagpie · 12/07/2021 12:00

I know a Murdo and a Torin, I think he's Torrin though which is the Scottish version as far as I know. We live in Glasgow btw, which I think you probably do too OP.

I seriously considered Torin for DS2, I really like it. It just seemed a bit 'out there' for us though and like the sort of name our families would be a bit 'eh?' about. He ended up being Hamish and I love his name so much.

Murdo is not a name I like, it's just a weird sound to me. But I know a little Struan, a Ruaridh, a Tavish, an Angus, a Fergus and several Euan and Alisdairs - so there are loads of nice Scottish names out there!

RSDS · 12/07/2021 12:05

I know a Torin, named as an oblique reference to a former footballer. Think I prefer Torren as a spelling. He gets nicknamed Tol, Toz and Tozza.

Cindie943811A · 12/07/2021 14:25

Friend named her now 15 month old Magnus. Father is from Shetlands.

3luckystars · 12/07/2021 14:27

When I saw Murdo I thought ‘Nooooo’ but then when I said it out loud, it’s actually nice!
Torin means ‘thunder’ as far as I know.

MrsSnarget · 13/07/2021 07:20

Great names! Be brave.
