Murdo and Torin

Hi everyone, I’m currently pregnant and struggling a bit with boys’ names this time.

What does everyone think of Murdo and Torin?

I was surprised when my family all really liked Murdo! We’re Scottish and the surname will be a Scottish one, if that matters. I’m not sure how well it ‘goes’ with DS’s name though, which is a very soft name with mainly vowel sounds (not Scottish), or if I even care whether they go in the first place. Is it too Scottish though?! We don’t live in Scotland atm.

I read that Torin is Irish and have added it to The List.

Thanks

Murdo is great know a few!

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 11/07/2021 21:00

Please don’t call your child Mungo ffs

Chilldonaldchill · 11/07/2021 21:01

I really like Torin.
I don't dislike Murdo and it doesn't really remind me of murder but it makes me think of a bad tempered gamekeeper. Desperately trying to recall if there's one in a book!

Deux · 11/07/2021 21:01

Torrin ( double r) is a small place on the Isle of Skye on Loch Slapin.

I think in Gaelic it means small hill/hillock.

lakesummer · 11/07/2021 21:05

I like Murdo but probably prefer Mungo ( but Glasgow is my home city)

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 11/07/2021 21:12

Glasgow is my home city too. It still doesn’t make Mungo a nice name.

SemperIdem · 11/07/2021 21:13

I really like Torin. Really strongly dislike Murdo however.

M0rT · 11/07/2021 21:20

I met a Murdo once, he was Scottish and absolutely gorgeous so you should go for that one 😊
I like Torin but I'm Irish and don't think I've ever met one if it matters to you that it's very unusual and a lot of Irish people probably won't recognise it.

mafted · 11/07/2021 21:25

Murdo is fantastic. I've only heard it recently and really like it.

Not fussed on Torin though.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 11/07/2021 21:26

I live Murdo, and I think it’s one of those names that only an actual Scot could pull off, mores the pity!

It’s very masculine, strong name.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/07/2021 21:30

I like them both but prefer Murdo.

Also like Findlay, Struan, Gregor, Innes, Nicol, Fraser and Brodie.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/07/2021 21:32

Plus Calvin, Kerr and Lorne.

Puffalicious · 11/07/2021 21:40

I 💚 both. Murdo is fantastic. What about:

Struan, Lauchlan, Lachlan, Innes, Duncan, Euan, Fyfe, Calum, Glen, Kier, Murray, Fergus, Angus, Brodie, Finn, Blair, Clyde, Christie, Nairn, Ramsay, Sorley.

My 3 DCs are in that lot. We're Scottish, in Scotland with Scottish surname.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2021 21:48

I love them both, but I am a big Alba-Phile.

dancemom · 11/07/2021 22:14

Murdo is a fantastic name, strong, unusual but traditional and memorable.

EssentialHummus · 11/07/2021 22:16

Murdo and Mungo are both awful.

Abzs · 11/07/2021 22:22

There is a Torrin and a Murdo in the area of Scotland I live in. There are also at least one each of most of the names mentioned above.

Peppallama · 11/07/2021 23:11

I'd worry murdo could also be merd-o once they start learning French.

Redsquirrel5 · 11/07/2021 23:15

I quite like Murdo and would go well if you have a strong Scottish surname. I had a Scottish surname when I was single.
If you like Torin what about Torquil? We used to know someone with this name. It really went with his surname and I thought it was a good strong name.

Appin · 11/07/2021 23:27

How about Tormad? I really wanted to use that but DH wasn't keen. I've loved the name ever since I read The Silver Darlings.

Murdo is a great name - I wasn't brave enough to agree to it for our DS, so we used it for our puppy instead.

honeybuns007 · 11/07/2021 23:35

@othersideofthefence

No offence meant OP but they sound a bit like Hobbit names
Yes!
DahliaMacNamara · 11/07/2021 23:37

To me Murdo's kind of an old man's name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/07/2021 23:39

Not keen on Murdo - a bit too close to murder. If you want something quite Scottish sounding then Alasdair, Fraser etc are much nicer imo. Or Magnus if you want an M name.

Torin has a nice sound though, has a slight Scandi feel to me.

mrstea301 · 11/07/2021 23:40

I quite like Murdo but I don't know if I would ever use it, to be fair. What about Magnus? Or Lachlan?

hawkehurstgang · 12/07/2021 00:15

Torin is okay, but Murdo isn't nice, it's way too murder-y and sounds like a surname - paired sith Torin, it kind of ruins Torin because together they're a bit much. What about Otto or something similar but less uncommon?
