What do you think of this female name mostly given in Scandinavia?

Thomas Alva Edison. But that's not an overwhelming association, so I think it's fine, and quite pretty.

I really don't get the whole 'vulva' associations Confused Do you also think of vulva when you see a Volvo?

Chwaraeteg · 05/07/2021 21:57

I associate it with the popular brand of cloth nappies. It also has a sort of medical ring to it.

MaMelon · 05/07/2021 21:59

Do you also think of vulva when you see a Volvo?

That’s hardly unusual - there’s even a raft of memes about this.

ArrrMeHearties · 05/07/2021 22:01

Alva is a town beside where I'm from. Not heard it as a name before

MitheringSunday · 05/07/2021 22:01

Can't say I've ever seen them - but going back to Alva, shoehorning a vulva association in there is rather juvenile tbh.

thefirstmrsrochester · 05/07/2021 22:04

It’s nice enough, but it’s a village in Clacks, Scotland to my ear.

Lockdownbear · 05/07/2021 22:04

Reminds me of the village even although I've never visited it.

Alba as well as being a cheap electronics brand is Gaelic for Scotland so I'd maybe think twice about using that alternative.

Names / words having different meanings in different languages is apparently something that gives car manufacturers a headache.

MyFartWillGoOn · 05/07/2021 22:04

I'd probably be the only one as I'm in the industry but ALVA is the Association of Leading Visiting Attractions in the uk.

So to me, it will always be associated with that-but I'd probably be in the minority!

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 05/07/2021 22:06

Is the A as in hat? Written, I too thought Vulva. If it is pronounced Alva with a hard short A then I think it is ok but prefer the Irish spelling.

Newmum110 · 05/07/2021 22:12

I also think Vulva it's the spelling, if you loved the name could you use Ailbhe? If Vulva is the first thing that adults think of you can imagine kids thoughts!!!!!

hawkehurstgang · 05/07/2021 23:25

Always annoys me when people post this name and it gets positive feedback, purely because I loved this name, posted on here for opinions, and everyone said it sounde like vulva, and put me right off 😭😂

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 23:33

Id never made the connection until this thread! Think because I'm more used to seeing it written as Ailbhe, I'd just never connected it to vulva.

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 23:36

I'm surprised it's not known as a name in Scotland.
And surprised that the town is spelt Alva

Iggi999 · 05/07/2021 23:36

Confused how should the town be spelt?

Everydayisawindingroad · 05/07/2021 23:38

A town in Scotland is what first springs to mind

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 23:41

@Iggi999

Confused how should the town be spelt?
Well, as it's in Scotland, Ailbhe.

But I guess I'm not that surprised. It's anglicised. I'm over my surprise.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/07/2021 23:42

I think Alva looks and sounds pretty - I wouldn't have considered any Vulva association Confused. It just looks like a fairly typical Scandi girls name to me - I think it's quite popular in Sweden (didn't realise it was Irish too, till I searched).

MaMelon · 05/07/2021 23:47

Well, as it's in Scotland, Ailbhe

It’s in Clackmannanshire - in the Central Belt, where Gaelic isn’t exactly widely spoken 😂 It’s not anglicised, it’s how Alva (the town) has always been spelt Confused

Iggi999 · 05/07/2021 23:50

Good grief

Iggi999 · 05/07/2021 23:51

How would you think Tillicoultry should be spelt then? Grin

MaMelon · 05/07/2021 23:51

Just Googled it - it would actually be Allmhagh Beag. Which it’s not, ‘cos it’s Alva.

Lockdownbear · 06/07/2021 00:21

Many place names in the Central Belt have Anglicised Gaelic names. But it doesn't change the fact that to many Scots it's the name of a town.

But ask the Beckhams nothing wrong with calling your kid after a place.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 06/07/2021 00:31

it's not exclusively a girl's name though.

it's a Hebrew boy's name meaning "brightness"

there's a fairly well-known American inventor called Thomas Alva Edison.
A perfect example of "nomen est omen"!🤣

Lunde · 06/07/2021 00:44
