REALLY struggling with boy names

Almondcroissant25 · 29/06/2021 16:07

Hello :) expecting first child soon, keeping the sex a surprise, but cannot decide on a boy’s name at all. The only ones I like are Henry and Julius but can’t have either of them due to close family. I love Arthur but it’s currently far too popular (close family member has also already got it) so is also a no go.

I like ‘classic’ names (for want of a better word) so nothing like Chase/Hunter/Atlas etc, and would love it to be outside of the top 50-100 if possible. I dislike the names that used to be popular a few decades ago (Paul, Steven, Michael, etc)

So I’m after a less common but still classical boy’s name. I’ve tried to find top 200 lists to look at the names between 100-200 but can’t find one anywhere!

Any suggestions would be so helpful and appreciated because at the moment this poor baby is going to be called ‘Baby’ for eternity if it’s a boy!!!

What do you like about Henry and Julius? How about Winston or Horatio?

Look at name lists from 80/100/120/140 years ago etc.

Thank you all so much, some nice suggestions but nothing is jumping out! I like Jeremy and Marcus and I quite like Frederick but feel as though there are a lot of baby Freddies/Freds/Fredericks currently (please correct me if I’m wrong?!)

Tobias is lovely but does it sound too ‘stuffy’, I guess could shorten to Toby.

In reply to prev poster (sorry don’t know how to tag), I’m not sure why I like Henry and Julius so much, I just find them quite strong but classical/well known names.

I also really like Caspar and Jasper but these have been vetoed by partner due to being ‘stuffy’ also!

Ahhh good old decisions and over-thinking of names… :)

Corin - appears in Shakespeare's As You Like It, but not common.
Not that I'm biased or anything.

It's Table 6 in this document that you want. That lists every name given to boys in any year which was given to at least 3 children.

It was me who asked why you liked Henry and Julius.
It might be the sound of the names or the nature of them.

Both are shakespearean characters. One is a king and the other an emperor. I suggested a couple of leader's names.

If it's he sounds you like, how about Hugh, Leonard or Cassius?

I did think of Marcus, but I suspect that might be popular because of Mr Rashford.

If you like classics I always like Edward, James and Robert.

Two of my personal favs are Sebastian and Orlando.

Almondcroissant25 · 29/06/2021 21:44

Thank you all!

@BertieBotts that’s a huge help, surely I will be able to find one on there!

@ILoveShula I do like Shakespearean names - never made the connection but I find most of them beautiful come to think of it and a few of my top girl’s names are Shakespearean. I like Leonard a lot but dislike ‘Leo’ which I think inevitably he’ll be known as by peers.
