Atlas, Remus or ?

Hi all,
I previously asked for help choosing baby two name but found out we’re now having a boy!

We already have a Hazel Elizabeth.

Our surname is short, two syllables and ends with an ‘oh’ sound.

We love the above names - Remus and Atlas. I’m more keen on Remus whereas my husband adores Atlas and is very much set on this!

We’ve entertained the middle name James for both, but wondering if anyone has suggestions for names in a similar vein to Remus and Atlas.

I like Remus although obviously it's very Harry Potter.
I'm really not keen on Atlas.
Names that I think sound similar or have a similar feel but work better than Atlas:
Rufus
Angus
Hector
Titus
Linnaeus
Theseus
Minos
Sirius
Albus

I wouldn’t think Remus was “obviously very Harry Potter”. I would never make that connection. Founder of Rome myth - yes. Uncle Remus stories - yes.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/04/2021 16:45

I like Remus.

Randus - son of Spartacus. Might be shortened to Randy.

Middlefadiddle · 02/04/2021 16:49

How about another tree name to go with Hazel, such as Rowan or Linden?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/04/2021 18:01

I dislike the sound of Remus, sorry. I like Atlas, although I think it's quite a "brave" name choice. James is gorgeous (love the nn Jem with it too).

I'd go for something like Rufus, Magnus, Cassius or even Gaius/Caius instead personally - they are still underused but not so connected to particular legends/myths (having said that, I have a soft spot for similar mythological Orion and Apollo! Blush )

BlowDryRat · 02/04/2021 19:41

My friend's little box is called Apollo if you like the Greek theme. Otherwise, how about:

Maximus
Cassius
Atticus
Alexis

Crosstrainer · 02/04/2021 19:44

Atlas and Remus both have unfortunate connotations (as a pp has laid out). I wouldn’t, just for that reason.

partyatthepalace · 02/04/2021 19:54

Not keen on either - but Remus of the two. I really like James though...

How about Linus, Lucas, Marcus, Miles, Giles, Innes, Angus, Barnabas, Julius Any of these go better with Hazel. Or if you want something grander Atticus, Augustus

sarah13xx · 02/04/2021 20:05

Out of those two I’d go for Atlas

Atholl
Axl
Ari
Reuben ?

All relatively unusual

Ellmau · 02/04/2021 20:39

Remus is better than Atlas.

What about:
Atticus
Rufus
Felix

Bimblybomeyelash · 02/04/2021 20:44

I don’t like either of them as much as I like Hazel!

Suggestions:

Angus
Kit
Otis

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 02/04/2021 20:45

Both are pretty bad tbh - Atlas James could end up being called AJ. James is much nicer name. Remus reminds me of Uncle Remus craft kits which were pocket money toys in the 70s/80s.

WiseOwlOne · 02/04/2021 20:47

Prefer Remus
What about Gaïus
Or Rebus?

udnertheradar · 02/04/2021 20:48

I love Atlas

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 02/04/2021 20:49

I love Atlas.
Wouldn't use James as a first name it's a bit boring IMO.

doctorhamster · 02/04/2021 21:02

Remus James is very Harry Potter. I recon most would assume a link.

PattyPan · 02/04/2021 21:13

I agree the combo of Remus and James is too Harry Potter. Remus isn’t a good name anyway - if anything Romulus is the better namesake
Atlas is a bit of a burden...

I like pp suggestions of Felix, Rufus, Marcus and Lucas.
What about:
Antony
Julian
Richard
Raphael
Alexander
Seth
Arthur

PattyPan · 02/04/2021 21:14

What if Atlas hates geography!

SchrodingersMother · 02/04/2021 21:48

How about
Rufus
Atticus
Tobias

jellybe · 02/04/2021 22:10

Atticus James would be awesome.

Violetlavenders · 02/04/2021 22:52

I like Remus James

Thedogscollar · 03/04/2021 00:53

Good taste in girls names but not so much for a boy.

littlebillie · 03/04/2021 05:57

Atticus
Alexander or Xander
Darius
Ptolemy
Cael
Fintan
Oscar or Osgar

MimiDaisy11 · 03/04/2021 09:25

I wonder if the people saying Remus has a racist connection are American? I'd never heard of it until I considered this name. Also it's something from over 100 years ago and it's not promoted. I really don't think that connection would be known by a lot or if they do know it they won't they think you called your kid after it.

Quite a few months I started a thread about the name Remus. There were a lot more people saying they linked it to Harry Potter - which wouldn't bother me.

I didn't end up choosing Remus but I still quite like it. I'm not so keen on Atlas.

daisypond · 03/04/2021 09:27

No, I’m British. Uncle Remus is one of the first things I think of. Harry Potter wouldn’t occur to me. I didn’t know there was a Remus in it.
