Am I talking myself out of a name?

Has anyone had the perfect name and thought about it so much they’ve maybe gone off it?

We’d pretty much decided on Meredith and it has had good reactions from most the people we’ve told. But the more I think about it I might be talking myself out of it? Although no real reason why.

Husband is already insisting on Merry which I don’t hate but I prefer Meredith and the Meredith’s I’ve known have gone by their full name.

Alternatives are Beatrix or Florence and both feel a bit too popular.

I feel like I’m going mad.

I always say if you don't like the possible NNs don't use the name.

Beatrix is nice I wouldn't say that was popular at all.Confused.

Keep all three on a shortlist for when she's born. It might be easier to decide once she's here - whether it's that you think she "looks like" a certain name, or perhaps it just feels right to call her by a certain name.

What do you mean by "insisting on" Merry? Does he accept that he might be the only one calling her that? Or would he be wanting to introduce her as Merry? I'm with you on Merry, it's a bit hobbit-like, but if it's just a dad nickname then ok.

DragonPoop · 29/01/2021 14:29

I love Meredith but don’t like the nickname Merry - how about the nickname Edie (eedee) instead, I think it’s lovely!

HerNameIsY0shimi · 29/01/2021 15:07

Hmmm not sure I've had this. But if you've gone off it, don't use it.

FWIW, I'm not that keen on it and think Florence and Beatrix are nicer. I find Meredith a bit matronly. Florence is popular, but I'm not sure Beatrix is?

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2021 16:12

I don't like Meredith at all. It's a surname, sounds masculine.

Beatrix will be Beetricks or Be-uh-trix, and will get called Trixie or Bea. Florence is quite popular.

Whatsyourflava · 29/01/2021 16:22

I don't like Meredith.

How about Margaret nn Maggie or Marnie? Neither of them too popular

HerNameIsY0shimi · 29/01/2021 16:22

Margot?

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2021 16:26

Mererid is nice, pronounced Merr-ERR-id.
Merr and ERR like in merry.
Welsh for Margaret.

Whatsyourflava · 29/01/2021 16:29

I definitely prefer Beatrix by the way and don't know any

Whatsyourflava · 29/01/2021 16:30

Marianne?

grandmasterstitch · 29/01/2021 16:54

We had this exact dilemma. Before we found out we were having a girl, Meredith was a front runner. But when we found out she is a girl we decided we don't like Merry enough to use it so it's slipped way down the list. We have Dorothy, Agatha and Hester on our list now

CeibaTree · 29/01/2021 18:28

I know a Meredith who goes by Edie as she hates her full name!
Beatrix is such a lovely name - good choice :)

daisypond · 29/01/2021 18:37

I don’t like Meredith at all. It’s a completely different style to Florence and Beatrix. I’m surprised that anyone would have it on their list alongside those other two. I’d go for Beatrix.

playbadlycast · 29/01/2021 20:40

I’m on my own here, it seems, but I love Meredith and don’t mind Merry at all. Good luck with the decision, OP.

resm · 29/01/2021 21:51

I really like Meredith! I think it’s kind of quirky, yet established. Makes me think of the actress Meredith Monroe.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/01/2021 21:59

I like Meredith and would put it in a similar bracket to Florence and Beatrix.

Chilldonaldchill · 29/01/2021 22:36

Meredith is beautiful!
That and Beatrice would be on my list if I was having future children but Meredith would be higher up my list due to its being a bit less popular.
I find Florence a little more boring.
Merry is a very cute NN.

MooseBreath · 29/01/2021 22:47

I like Meredith. The only one I know uses her full name, but people often call her Mer.

daisypond · 30/01/2021 08:34

I’m baffled why anyone would put Meredith in the same bracket asBeatrix or Florence. Meredith is a Welsh male name/surname. As a girl’s name, it is a relatively modern, mispronounced, surname-type name, not an old classic.

Himawarigirl · 30/01/2021 10:58

You can’t insist on a nn and may not end up wanting to use one. My friend made a big point of introducing her daughter as ‘Charlotte, to be known as Charlie’. After a month or so I never heard them or anyone call her Charlie again, she’s always Charlotte.

Angel2702 · 30/01/2021 11:08

I love Meredith. If my yogurt had been a boy we’d decided on a name that was a bit out there as a full name. I liked the full name and one potential short version, my husband liked a different short version. We’d have probably ended up using a combination in real life. Using a short version doesn’t mean you can’t use the full version as well.

Bluebell9 · 30/01/2021 11:09

I'd keep your options open.

We spent ages choosing a name for DD. Then the day before I was being induced, I decided I didn't want to call her that.
She wasn't named until the day after she was born and the name we picked had never been brought up before!

I love the names Florence and Beatrix though

Quercus3 · 30/01/2021 14:25

I love Meredith, beautiful name. Merry is quite cute for a family nickname too 🙂

TeaTimeReader · 30/01/2021 14:27

My first thought for Meredith is Meredith Kercher. Love the name Beatrix (Bea) or Florence

whoamongstus · 30/01/2021 14:34

I love the name Meredith! Beatrix is cute but I think I would always think '...Potter'. Florence is lovely but very popular now.
