I prefer Alvin to Alby.

DramaAlpaca · 26/01/2021 23:29

Alvin might be a bit chipmunk Grin but it's better than Alby. Less cutesy.

Aveline is lovely, very elegant.

Orphlids · 26/01/2021 23:36

Alvin may be a bit chipmunky, but it's certainly better than Alby. I think you can get away with it! Theodore has taken off lately, and no one seems to mention chipmunks.

Hopingformydb · 26/01/2021 23:37

@dramaalpaca I know people will automatically say "and the chipmunks" when I say Alvin but I really love it 🤣🤣

Thank you I do love Aveline 💕

James

SionnachRua · 26/01/2021 23:38

Alvin is definitely better than Alby - I feel you could always nickname him Alvy/ Alby from Alvin anyway?

Aveline is very nice.

Hopingformydb · 26/01/2021 23:40

@orphlids that's true & I love Theo as a name not simon though 🤣🤣 but Theo is way too popular now i know loads or I would have considered It

Oh well excuse me for the perfectly understandable mistake of thinking it was a middle name Confused

Christ

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/01/2021 23:56

Of the two - Albie (I'd use the more popular spelling to avoid confusion), although I much prefer it as a nickname for Albert.

Alvin is much too chipmunk, although similar Edwin is more useable I think.

If you love uncommon, short "A" names for boys, then what about Alaric? - an ancient name with a very cool/trendy feel imo.

MercyBodle · 27/01/2021 01:52

I like Alby best, though I prefer it short for Albert. Not keen on Alvin at all.

Ellada19 · 27/01/2021 06:55

Love Alvin! and also Calvin :) both very underrated names. Simple, classic, masculine but not boring or overdone. Great choice!

BaronessVonCake · 27/01/2021 07:15

Alvin much better than Alby- Alby is far to cutesy for my taste and I don't think it works for an adult male!

Blondiney · 27/01/2021 07:35

Alex James is better, bit Blur though admittedly.

ILoveStickers · 27/01/2021 07:40

There's an Irish Saint Ailbhe, sometimes Anglicised as Alvy or Alby (or Elvis!).

So it's not out of the question as a standalone male name.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 27/01/2021 07:43

Alby

I know it as an adult name, so don’t think if it as ‘cutesy’.
There is a theatre director called Alby James!

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 27/01/2021 07:43

Alvin is too Stardust.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 27/01/2021 07:44

Marvin?

KeeefBurtain · 27/01/2021 07:46

You could use Elvin instead to get away from the chipmunk vibe.

Chilldonaldchill · 27/01/2021 09:12

Alvin is fine.
I personally prefer Albie (though spelt like that) as I know some lovely teenage ones.

RuthW · 27/01/2021 12:19

Alvin definitely

finallychangedmyusername · 27/01/2021 13:09

Alvin is fine, chipmunk association isn't too strong and isn't a bad thing. I personally find Albie both too cute sounding, nicknamey and I think of "albino".

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 27/01/2021 14:35

I really hate Alby. Is it even a real name? Its suddenly so popular and I don't get where it came from? It sounds like a nickname for a baby named Albert, but definitely not a suitable name for anyone over the age of 2.

I don't really like Alvin either but it's better than Alby in that at least it's a real name.

James is lovely though. Like nn Jimmy, so cute for a kid imo!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 27/01/2021 14:37

Alban is kind of cool and unusual and could have nn Alby?
