Charlotte Maya or Maya Charlotte?

esee22 · 26/01/2021 13:11

Hello Smile

Expecting our first DD soon. We love both names equally but can't decide which order we like best. Maya will be pronounced "MAY-a". Our surname begins with B and is two syllables.

Which is better?

Charlotte Maya B
Maya Charlotte B

Thank you

I prefer Charlotte Maya, as Charlotte is a favourite name of mine. Maya is nice, but you may be forever correcting the pronunciation.

bourbonne · 26/01/2021 13:17

Well, do you want a daughter called Charlotte or a daughter called Maya? The middle name will pale into insignificance and most people won't know what it is.

If you're pronouncing it to rhyme with "player", that's going to be a pain to live with, so I'd choose Charlotte.

HagenDaz · 26/01/2021 13:17

Neither because I read that as Chocolate and Mayan Chocolate is a thing.

Firebird83 · 26/01/2021 13:30

Charlotte Maya

ILoveShula · 26/01/2021 13:59

Charlotte is much nicer than Maya

Enidblyton1 · 26/01/2021 14:04

Well those names are quite different so which do you prefer?
You will have problems with pronunciation with Maya - if that bothers you? Some people will pronounce May-a and some will pronounce My-a.

partyatthepalace · 26/01/2021 14:08

They are both nice, and work in either order.

I prefer Charlotte, as though it’s popular it’s also classic, whereas Maya feels part of the Mia/May/Maisie trend so it won’t date as well.

Candleabra · 26/01/2021 14:11

I'm not sure they work together either way round. Sorry.

WTAFIhavelosttheferret · 26/01/2021 14:14

Maya Charlotte reminded me of Mea Culpa

Chilldonaldchill · 26/01/2021 14:35

I prefer the name Maya but I pronounce it differently from you so I would say Charlotte Maya is best.

MySocalledLoaf · 26/01/2021 14:37

If you might have a second child save one name in case you have another girl. It’s nice to love both names equally.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 26/01/2021 14:56

I think Charlotte Maya sounds better. Make sure you like Charlie and Lottie as shortened versions (you won't have a say in it once she is older). That may well help you decide.

PompomDahlia · 26/01/2021 21:08

I love Maya Charlotte. To me, Maya is a strong name and I've liked it before it was popular. I think Angelou, or Obama and Kamala Harris both having successful sisters called Maya. Nice meanings too. Though I would pronounce as My-a or it may be confusing.

Charlotte is gorgeous but possibility of being shortened to Charlie if a first name, or Lottie which is a bit childish.

calimommy · 26/01/2021 21:20

Depends if you want it pronounced mAya or mia (spelling used for phonetic example)

Charlotte Maya doesnt flow well imo
Maya Charlotte is ok but I prefer the name Charlotte of the two names so would choose that as first name. Also as PP said, middle names are really just fluff -no one remembers or cares for them. It's part of the reason we always use family names as middle names -they aren't used day to day so it doesn't really matter. It also might be worth considering only using one of the two names in case you have another DD and want them to have the other name as their first.

YakkityYakYakYak · 26/01/2021 21:23

Both nice names but not sure they go very well together either way around.

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 26/01/2021 21:24

Charlotte first

Spidey66 · 26/01/2021 21:25

Both lovely but Charlotte has the edge

Bluesername · 26/01/2021 21:29

Charlotte Maya sounds nicer to me.

MrsRockAndRoll · 26/01/2021 21:29

Both very pretty but I don't think they flow together

fruitypancake · 26/01/2021 21:30

Charlotte Maya

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/01/2021 23:20

It you truly like them both equally, then I'd stick with Charlotte Maya. While I really love Maya when pronounced as May-ah myself, most people seem to use the My- ah pronunciation which could annoy you and your daughter.

And although it's more popular currently, Charlotte also has a much longer, more steady history of use in the UK and so feels far more classic than more trendy/fashionable Maya (and thus is less likely to date).

Oneandabean · 27/01/2021 05:38

Maya Charlotte is lovely but pronounced my-a which is the more common pronounciation. There’s a kids tv show called maya the bee which is said my-a so kids would probably say it that way too.
I’m not a fan of Charlotte but lottie is a nice nn

smoothchange · 27/01/2021 05:56

Order is irrelevant, nobody uses middle names. Call her the name you like the most out of the 2.

forestsmurf · 27/01/2021 06:08

Charlotte maya, much prefer Charlotte over Maya. I would also initially pronounce it My-a do be prepared to correct people regularly if going for Maya.

Prianiki · 27/01/2021 06:21

Charlotte. Both are very pretty names. Your DD will have to correct people constantly on the pronunciation of Maya just because the vast majority of people will say "my-a" and say it confidently.
