We decided to scrap the names Rohini / Ruhini, as DH and I think these might be too old fashioned/ traditional. We might revisit them again but for now we are considering other options.
What do you think of Anoushka and Anahita?
Any similar name suggestions along those lines, Modern with a bit of an edge?
Thanks! :)

I really like Anahita. Persian Goddess, is it fertility?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 22/01/2021 20:26

I also like Afia

NavyBerry · 22/01/2021 21:51

Do you like the meaning of Anoushka?

Monsoon31 · 22/01/2021 21:53

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee I think so! I’ve also seen it on some Indian baby names lists, not sure whether it’s Persian, Indian or both?
I’ve also seen Anoushka having Russian meaning.. I’m after an Indian name, nice to see that they have links to other cultures as well

@NavyBerry I’ve seen several meanings for it but the Hindi meaning which I love is “one who fulfils their aspirations and goals”

How about Radhika?

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 22/01/2021 22:20

Anoushka 100%!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 22/01/2021 22:29

Anoushka is nice but kind of overdone, it’s popular

CoddledAsAMommet · 22/01/2021 22:32

One of the loveliest people I ever knew was an Anoushka. Beautiful, beautiful name.

Babyfg · 22/01/2021 22:48

Not a big fan of anoushka, nothing really wrong with it. What about avalie or friya?

Babyfg · 22/01/2021 22:50

Sorry thought you were looking for Persian names 🤦‍♀️

daisypond · 23/01/2021 01:10

Anoushka is nice.
Sasha? I know a cool, edgy one of Indian background.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 23/01/2021 04:19

Anoushka definitely. , I don’t know of any children called this , only ever known one , who is in her late twenties.

Peachbubble · 23/01/2021 07:56

I like Anoushka.

paiop · 23/01/2021 08:02

I teach an Anisha

bourbonne · 23/01/2021 08:06

Anoushka's lovely.
Not so keen on Anahita. I don't think it's pretty and it feels awkward to say...I want to take a gulp of breath afterwards!

Monsoon31 · 23/01/2021 08:07

Thank you for all the feedback! :)
@Babyfg I didn’t know that Anoushka was also a Persian name, what does it mean?

I’m getting a bit thrown off by the very strong association to Russian culture, although I have heard of so many Indian girls having the name Anoushka... I wonder if it definitely has links to Sanskrit 🤔 Or should I just consider purely Sanskrit names like Avisha, Amisha, Anisha etc (seem so boring compared to Anoushka)

I googled it's meaning which seems to vary.
One says "One with no master".
"Everlasting light"
"Light in darkness/destroyer of darkness"
Apparently of Indian origin but also mentioned as Greek origin

And when I googled it, I also found Anaisha which apparently means special or peaceful

VenusClapTrap · 23/01/2021 09:54

Anoushka is lovely.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/01/2021 10:17

Anoushka as an Indian girl name, yes. I know a child called Anoushka her parents are Indian

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 23/01/2021 10:59

I know a 45 year old Anoushka. She's British and her family are from India. I also know a 16 year old Anoushka from an Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish London-based family. It's a striking name. Both Anoushkas are often called Nush as a nickname.
