Baby sister name to go best with Iris

Options are

  1. Athena
  2. Phoebe
  3. Daphne

I like the fact that Iris is known but not overly popular. I am keen to hit the same mark and pick the one that is classy and ethereal, just as Iris is.

Pros/cons for each.

Phoebe - I feel it hits the same sort of timeless mark but is very popular so perhaps not
Athena - less popular but maybe slightly try-hard in a way that Iris is not.
Daphne - not popular and more timeless but not as “pretty” as the others?

Essentially want the one that hits the closest “tone” to Iris as I feel I really got it right with her name. OH really keen on Athena so if that fits the bill then ideal! V grateful for advice.

I like Daphne the best and think it goes well with Iris. They are all nice names though!

Delphine

MercyBodle · 19/01/2021 06:00

Phoebe is my favourite. Daphne 2nd choice.

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 06:01

Are siblings Theo and Athena too similar?

Phoebe out of your list.

Delphine is lovely as a pp suggested. I only dont like daphne as two flowers together.

Sylvie or Margot go well too I think!

PoppiesinOctober · 19/01/2021 06:12

Athena

EileenGC · 19/01/2021 06:14

I'd choose Daphne or Athena, but I like them all.

Is Theo ever Theodore? I don't think Athena and Theo would bother me, I guess it depends on the accent. I pronounce Athena with a long E (A-theh-na instead of A-thee-na) so the vowels are very different to those in Theo.

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 06:55

I guess the question isn’t which is “best” name more which has the most classy, timeless and ethereal vibe (which is what I think Iris has).

I know a baby Athena but she is Greek so can pull it off.

I prefer Daphne of your 3. Phoebe is very popular.

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 07:07

Mine will also be Greek x

Athena

liverpool1981 · 19/01/2021 07:17

I like Reeba, Bianca and Eden

edgeware · 19/01/2021 07:21

I know an Iris and her sister is called Cecilia

EileenGC · 19/01/2021 07:27

Ooh go with Athena then! Properly pronounced is lovely Smile

EdgeOfACoin · 19/01/2021 07:47

Funnily enough, Daphne immediately came to mind before I'd even seen your choices.

I'm not sure why I associate the names with each other!

Ithinkhedidit · 19/01/2021 07:56

I think Iris goes best with Daphne. I like at 3 names though so you can't really go wrong imo.

RosesforMama · 19/01/2021 07:57

My Granny was Iris. Her sister was Cecily.

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 08:07

What are your thoughts when you hear Athena? Does it strike anyone as too try hard or am I just overthinking? Iris doesn’t have that vibe at all to me as feels somehow more understated classy? Athena more exotic as opposed to ethereal? If Athena similar then great! But honestly opinons please please x

RosesforMama · 19/01/2021 08:18

Agree Athena is very different vibe from Iris, though I have to say despite it being my Gran's name I am not too keen; too close in sound to Irish (there's nothing wrong with being Irish, I just don't think it's a nice first name).

ellenpartridge · 19/01/2021 08:19

I'm not super keen on any of your options. My first thought was Eloise.

EdgeOfACoin · 19/01/2021 08:28

If you love the name Athena and would regret not going for it, then you should name your daughter Athena.

It does sound a bit try-hard, but if your daughter is Greek then you can get away with it.

You may be aware that Athena used to be the name of a poster shop (possibly still is), so it depends if that connotation bothers you.

Iris strikes me as a quintessentially English name (though I understand it's also the name of a Greek goddess) while Athena is unmistakably Greek. For that reason I don't think they quite 'go' . However, if you really want to name your daughter Athena and would secretly regret it if you called her Daphne or Phoebe, then you should go with Athena.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 19/01/2021 08:29

How about Esme?

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 09:31

I def want it to hit a similar tone to Iris so perhaps Daphne or Phoebe better

FluffyEggsontoast · 19/01/2021 09:52

Athena is too try harder I agree
Iris is beautiful and effortless

I like Daphne and Phoebe
How about Verity, Clementine, Zoe, Margaret

Msgiggles30 · 19/01/2021 09:57

Only thing with Daphne is its the main character in Bridgerton which everyone is raving about right now so may become a more popular name again in the next few years. Like Bella was after Twilight or Aria after GOT. Although still won't be a common name im sure!
