Baby sister name to go best with Iris

Options are

  1. Athena
  2. Phoebe
  3. Daphne

I like the fact that Iris is known but not overly popular. I am keen to hit the same mark and pick the one that is classy and ethereal, just as Iris is.

Pros/cons for each.

Phoebe - I feel it hits the same sort of timeless mark but is very popular so perhaps not
Athena - less popular but maybe slightly try-hard in a way that Iris is not.
Daphne - not popular and more timeless but not as “pretty” as the others?

Essentially want the one that hits the closest “tone” to Iris as I feel I really got it right with her name. OH really keen on Athena so if that fits the bill then ideal! V grateful for advice.

I tend to agree that people may think you were inspired by Bridgerton if you choose Daphne. It's not a big problem really though.

Spied · 19/01/2021 10:06

Daphne has the same ethereal vibe as Iris imo.
Athena sounds more warrior and try hard and just doesn't go with Iris.
Phoebe goes well with Iris but I personally think it looks and sounds ugly.

sleepingfox · 19/01/2021 12:09

I think Daphne has the closest feeling to Iris, and it’s a beautiful name. The others on your list are lovely but they don’t have the same vibe as Iris to me.

RuthW · 19/01/2021 12:16

All of them are less popular than Iris but Daphne is my fav.

Fleurchamp · 19/01/2021 12:17

Penelope?

ParisJeTAime · 19/01/2021 12:21

I am not keen on Athena. Didn't she spring from her father's hair and not have a mother? Or am I mixing up my myths?

It was also the name of a chain of shops in the nineties, so all in all, it doesn't do it for me.

I like Daphne and think it is similar to Iris. Kind of vintage I think, rather than timeless imho.

I also like Ophelia a lot, which I think would go well.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 19/01/2021 13:11

Daphne makes me think of Daffy Duck.

Alwayswrongneverright · 19/01/2021 13:13

Absolutely love Daphne but I'm a bit confused, you mentioned Theo and also Iris so is this baby number 3 or are you looking for a similar vibe to Iris because you can't use it?? 🧐

Neednameadviceplease · 19/01/2021 13:26

Yeah I really want to get that beautiful, ethereal and effortless vibe. Interestingly in Greek Athena does strike that exact tone but I’d like to know what the feel is here.

Definitely Phoebe in that list. It's not too popular where I am (north London). I only know one. I hear a LOT of Irises at the playground, so I think Iris is more popular actually.

Athena might be seen as too try hard. I feel like it's on a par with Aphrodite or Artemis. All lovely names, but a bit much. Also a PP thought it was pronounced A-theh-na above Confused so you may have to do a lot of correcting over the years.

Daphne isn't as pretty or ethereal as you say yourself.

Firebird83 · 19/01/2021 14:03

Daphne fits best with Iris

EileenGC · 19/01/2021 14:53

Well I'm not British so trying to write phonics down isn't my forte, but what I meant is that it's not pronounced with too strong an 'ee'. Not in Greece at least.

But what do I know, maybe the Greek person whose name I've heard being said like that for years (by other Greeks), doesn't know how to pronounce her own language either...

They're all beautiful names OP. Some will get them wrong in English (I can't stand people saying Daph-nay for example) but they're easy to correct.

Iris and Daphne are both flowers.

Honestly I would go with Athena. I can tell it's your favourite.
You will have some people say it's 'try hard' on here. But it's a beautiful name, it's ethereal, whimsical and you are Greek so it's perfect. It's also not excessively fussy or flouncy, lovely name.
Daphne and Phoebe both great names but Phoebe is quite common so loses that ethereal feel for me.
Daphne is a wonderful name and my second choice. However, somehow it strikes two different tones for me. On one hand it is ethereal and delicate and fairy like. On the other it is a bit musty and frumpy. I think once i met a little girl with that name the second association would disappear though.
I'm also really not keen on the nickname Daff or Daffy which could arise.
So for me Athena, followed closely by Daphne and then Phoebe.
Theo and Athena sound fine together too.

FluffyEggsontoast · 19/01/2021 16:54

Athena has a similar feel to Atlas or Ocean or Titus to me. It's not understated at all. Sounds OTT. Unlike Iris which is beautiful

Sausagedog1 · 19/01/2021 17:01

One thing I would say, is sometimes the need to create a 'feel' or 'vibe' to others can overshadow the need to find a name you love.
You have to say this name every day, over and over again. The initial reaction people get to the name subsides when they get to know your child. The most important thing (within reason) is that is strikes the right tone for YOU and that you love it.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 19/01/2021 17:23

I was watching Come Dine With Me earlier whilst feeding & there was a delightful elderly lady named Daphne , made me think what a beautiful name . Definitely goes with Iris .

daisypond · 19/01/2021 17:34

I think Daphne fits best, but it’s not quite the same vibe. It’s still a little bit old lady/hipster, though is becoming more known. Dafne Keen is the actress in His Dark Materials.
Phoebe is nice, but very popular.
Athena is more Greek/cultural/posh. Nice name, though.

Selene?

Happenchance · 19/01/2021 17:44

@Neednameadviceplease

Are siblings Theo and Athena too similar?
So are you looking for something that goes with both Theo and Iris?

Athena and Phoebe are both too similar to Theo in my opinion. I'm not keen of Daphne.

Voleta is nice.

onthinice · 19/01/2021 17:46

From your list, Athena. Though my immediate thought before seeing the options was Pearl.
Phoebe extremely common (though lovely).

daisypond · 19/01/2021 17:47

Thalia is very Greek, and nice.
