Thoughts on the name Piers

I’ve always liked the name Piers. As Piers Morgan has become a household name over the years I’m concerned people would immediately associate the name with him and he isn’t necessarily well liked. Would this put you off using the name?

No I think of piers Morgan or the lunatic rapist from emmerdale

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/01/2021 01:02

My Ds, now 20 had a Piers in his class but just a "normal" lad, not posh or poor. I suppose I'd associate the name with him more than Piers Morgan, which is fine as he seems like a decent young man and was a good friend to my DS.

Starlightstarbright1 · 09/01/2021 01:07

Yes i would think of piers morgan.
I do like the name though so am on the fence

tobee · 09/01/2021 01:24

It's a seaside name is it it?

tobee · 09/01/2021 01:28

*isn't it it?

tobee · 09/01/2021 01:28

Fuck done it again.

NameChange84 · 09/01/2021 01:34

Cant shake the Morgan link. It was the very first thought...Piers...Morgan

Like Boris...Johnson, Donald...Trump etc

And if I’m saying that, I think it’s far more likely your average person in the street will think the same. One of my bosses is called Piers. Yet it was Morgan that was the instant association, not my boss.

Only choose it if you can tolerate the assumption that you are a fan of his.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/01/2021 01:41

What about Per or Pierce?

Close but nor twated.

BendyLikeBeckham · 09/01/2021 01:45

nope. bad idea.

Piers Fletcher Dervish.

Wet upper class twat.

Loved Alan though Grin

DrDetriment · 09/01/2021 01:46

I instantly think of Alan B'stard. His sidekick was the incredibly stupid Piers Fletcher-Dervish.

I feel it speaks of someone who spent the last weeks of their maternity leave slightly fancying Piers Morgan and that's how it happened. Because why else would you when he's so prominent and divisive, unless he actually had a hand in it.

Chambored · 09/01/2021 01:55

Immediately think of Morgan = automatic no.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 09/01/2021 01:56

It always sounds like the multiple of ‘pier’ to me.
And sort if flat and featureless in sound.
Or a verb. Peers.

I would immediately think ‘Morgan’ but it wouldn’t last: people become associated with their own name.

Thank you! I was trying to figure out why it had a Tim Nice But Dim feel to it.
RizzleDrizzle · 09/01/2021 02:13

Piers Morgan - see all the replies above, arrogant overbearing “journalist” who can’t interview for toffee!

Piers Corbyn - wanky brother of the worst labour leader in the last century who himself is a weird and arrogant conspiracy theorist who is making the current situation a million times worse, and encouraging people not to wear masks vaccinate etc!

Yeah not sure I’d want to call a kid piers at the moments

PoulePouletteEternellement · 09/01/2021 03:56

I always think of the 14th century allegorical poem 'Piers Plowman' when I hear the name, so I would assume that's what any parent was thinking of if they chose it.

Me too, as well as Piers Morgan. Not positive associations for me.
timetochangeagainforever · 09/01/2021 04:09

I think Pierce is nicer

grapewine · 09/01/2021 04:14

Couldn't get past Morgan link. Pierce is nice though.

Bluesername · 09/01/2021 06:47

Jeremy Corbyn's brother is called Piers.

orangeblosssom · 09/01/2021 06:50

It makes me think of Morgan straight away. Confused

Hailtomyteeth · 09/01/2021 06:53

Piers. And his sister, Promenades. Is it where they were conceived?

Porridgeoat · 09/01/2021 06:56

It’s nice. There’s also Lars

babynamelover · 09/01/2021 07:22

I usually like boys names ending in s but for some reason it's always seemed unfinished to me.
Another vote for Pierce (Brosnan).

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/01/2021 07:34

I knew a Piers at school over 50 years ago. It was a fairly posh Grammar not a public school. He was in the third year (Yr 9)when I started, blonde curly hair and all the girls had a crush on him. This is who the name makes me think of. When your baby is older none of his contempories will have heard of Morgan or Corbyn.
