Me and DH both like the name Elsie but I also really like/prefer Lucy. He's not as keen. What are your thoughts?

Lucy; underused classic.
Elsie is increasingly popular (know of several in primary), although I like it as a nickname for Elspeth (as above).

Lucy isn't underused, it's really popular, but so is Elsie. I agree that Lucy is a classic.

Lucy

I like both but prefer Lucy.

Lucy is gorgeous, I may be bias because it’s my sisters name but if it wasn’t I would be very tempted for DD. Elsie is SO common, I was at the park today and heard 2

Fromthebirdsnest · 08/11/2020 10:59

Lucy is beautiful... Elsie is meh .. x

I have a 14 year old elsie! At the time her name was not popular at all. I named her after my wonderful granny who had lots of grand children and great grandchildren but none of them had her name.

I will say, she was horrified and said I should call my daughter Elise! Same letters different order. I’m so glad I didn’t, my girl really suits her name.

Enderline · 08/11/2020 11:10

I've said this before on other threads, but to me Elsie manages to be both cutesy and dowdy, which is quite some achievement for a name.

As you can tell, I dislike the name Elsie intensely Grin

I agree. It's frumpy and old lady-ish yet sickeningly cutesy and twee. Lucy, while not one of my favourite names, is much more mature and will age better. El- names are right on trend at the moment.

Another vote for Lucy.
I know you didn't ask but I also love Dulcie and Darcy which have a sim feel.

MeOldBamboo · 08/11/2020 16:45

I have a Lucy. She’s the only one at school. Named after the heroine of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, my favourite book!

ifigoup · 08/11/2020 16:54

Lucy is about a billion times nicer than Elsie, and will also date better.

Twobrews · 08/11/2020 19:47

Cannot stand Lucy. I just can't imagine being an adult called Lucy at all, even though I knew one she always went by Lu.

I prefer Elsie.

GodolphinHorne · 09/11/2020 07:31

DH suggested Elsie for our DD. So glad we avoided that, as there are loads where we are. The midwife who visited us after we got home said she’d met three that week! Plus, I didn’t love it and it’s a nickname, not a name in its own right.

Lucy is a great name.

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 03:18

Lucy is a lovely name and whilst adorable for a little girl, is also quite traditional and doesn’t sound so cutesy on an adult.

Could you go Lucie, Lucille, Lucinda, Lucia to please DH?

Zoflorabore · 11/11/2020 03:24

I have a 9yr old Lucy. I chose the name when I was a little girl as I always loved it.

I had my ds first, he’s 17 now and then had Lucy when he was 8. She has one other in her primary school who is in the infants.

My ds is called Oliver nn Ollie and their names go nicely together.

Obv completely biased.

Lucy

Elsie bring a to mind a chain smoking old lady
