Me and DH both like the name Elsie but I also really like/prefer Lucy. He's not as keen. What are your thoughts?

I like Lucy much more. I think it’s a lovely name. I’m not as keen on Elsie.

Elsie

grownags · 05/11/2020 17:29

They call herNatasha but she looks like Elsie - I don't want to go to Chelsea -Elvis Costello - says it all really.
Lucy is beautiful

Hirewiredays · 05/11/2020 17:31

Lucy!

sibbys · 05/11/2020 17:34

Love both... Hard to choose. Lucy. More classic.

christmasmum · 05/11/2020 17:34

Could compromise on Lucie?

Runmybathforme · 05/11/2020 17:39

Elsie reminds me of an old women with her hair in curlers and a fag hanging out of the corner of her mouth.

phoenixrosehere · 05/11/2020 17:46

Definitely Lucy. Lucy reminds me of the classic American TV show “ I Love Lucy”.

Elsie reminds me of Borden Cheese (known in Canada and the US). Their mascot was called Elsie the Cow.

Lucy!

I have a little Lucy! She’s 3 months and we’ve had nothing but positive reactions to her name.

villainousbroodmare · 05/11/2020 18:25

Lucy.

chickenninja · 05/11/2020 18:32

Lucy

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/11/2020 18:35

If it has to be one of the two, then Lucy works much better with the classic William (although I personally always find Lucy a bit cute/sweet sounding for some reason.) Elsie is a bit trendy and will likely date.

BUT Elsie as a nickname for Elisabeth/Elizabeth is gorgeous , and goes perfectly with William - they are both traditional names that don't go out of fashion, and suit all ages.

foxtiger · 05/11/2020 18:35

I don't dislike Elsie but I love Lucy - it's probably in my top 10 girls' names. I don't see shortening informally among friends as a bad thing - and it doesn't oblige the parents to do the same.

Carrotcakey · 05/11/2020 18:38

So many little Elsie’s where I am. I don’t get the love. Lucy is a million times better.

TazMac · 05/11/2020 18:41

Both are nice but there seem to be a lot of 5 year old Elsies around (in my area anyway). Lucy is not as popular and also more timeless imo.

alexdgr8 · 05/11/2020 18:42

Lucy definitley.
Elsie is horrid, a dragon character from Coronation Street.
it really is an outdated below-stairs name. avoid.

TazMac · 05/11/2020 18:43

Elsie reminds me of an old women with her hair in curlers and a fag hanging out of the corner of her mouth.

Have you been watching Corrie reruns Grin?

I agree there is the Elsie Tanner connotation but that may wear off as time goes by (I hope so, for the sake of all the 5 year old Elsies round here).

Pemba · 05/11/2020 18:50

Lucy is so much nicer, and goes better with your DS's name.

Elsie, as a pp said, manages to be both dowdy and cutesy at the same time. Elise is nice, though.

MooChops89 · 05/11/2020 18:50

I have a 2 year old Lucy, I've always loved the name and I chose it particularly because it suits any age. Me and DH call her Lulu at home but that stuck from when she was tiny and nobody else does.

CharlieBoo · 05/11/2020 22:32

I’m a Lucy, there are a million names I love more than my name but Elsie isn’t one of them lol... so I vote Lucy x

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/11/2020 22:36

Lucy

diddlediddle · 06/11/2020 06:26

Lucy by a million miles, especially if you have William.

Elsie is unbearably cutesy, and also very trendy right now.

Elise could be an alternative?

Ellen35 · 06/11/2020 08:38

Thanks everyone. There seems to be a lot more love for Lucy. Surprised how many people aren't keen on Elsie. Just need to get DH on board!

I have a 15 year old Elsie . Her actual name is Elspeth which she may prefer to use in the future. She likes her name but as other posters mentioned it has become popular.
