My friend had a beautiful baby boy a week ago. Her and her partner can't decide on a name

She loves:
Oliver
Edward

She likes:
Rupert
Peter
Harry
Alexander

He loves:
Peter
Alexander

He likes:
Oliver
Theodore

They would really like a name neither of them have thought of yet, similar to the names they like, thay they both just love instantly, I think they may have to pick a name one loves and the other likes. To complicate things they have a large blended family so lots of names already ruled out.

Sorry didn't actually ask a question, basically any suggestions and thoughts on the names they already like

Oliver.

Unless she gets the surname. If he gets the surname, she gets the first name.

And their choices are sooooo similar that really, it's not Javier-Christiane versus John, is it?

EnglishRose1320 · 26/10/2020 19:48

That's what I said, they are all names with a similar feel, it's not like they are chalk and cheese names. Good point about the surname, think it will be his they use.

I think it's very hard to find a name that both parents love initially, but names do tend to grow. It looks like Oliver and Alexander are the front runners here. The important thing is that they both agree on these names! Similar styles:
Benjamin
James
Sebastian
Max
Tobias/Toby
Henry
Arthur
Joshua

Lots of strong names. My favourite is Oliver

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2020 19:51

Looks like they need to narrow it down to the ones on both a 'like' and a 'love' list.

So Oliver, Peter and Alexander.

But all are classic names so it shouldn't be too hard to find common ground.

LarkDescending · 26/10/2020 19:52

Lovely lists.

How about Laurence, Louis, Henry, Nicholas or Sebastian?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/10/2020 19:54

Christopher
Christian
Marcus
Robert

seem a bit similar?

Otherwise I think they should go with Oliver or Alexander. They're both lovely names, and maybe they'll have a second in the future and can use the other one!

Angliski · 26/10/2020 19:58

Otto?

merryhouse · 26/10/2020 20:00

One thing to bear in mind is that Oliver is currently considerably more in use than Peter.

Christopher
David
Andrew
Harold
Robert

merryhouse · 26/10/2020 20:01

reading that back I have no idea what Harold is doing there Grin.... but he popped into my head and took up residence

LarkDescending · 26/10/2020 20:01

Peter Alexander would be a lovely choice.

NameChange30 · 26/10/2020 20:06

Well firstly, baby should have her surname, with it without his surname as an additional surname or a middle name.

Secondly, the first name should be a name they both like or love, so it's between Oliver, Peter and Alexander. My advice is to consider nicknames (Ollie, Pete, Alex or Xander) as that might help to narrow it down. Then maybe try using each name for a few days and see which one seems to fit best?

NameChange30 · 26/10/2020 20:07

with or without

NameChange30 · 26/10/2020 20:08

I also like James and Adam but they might not be able to use them if family members already have.

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2020 20:18

Top choices:
Oliver
Peter
Alexander

Of those 3, I'd choose Peter as the other two are used a lot.

Depends on the surname - which one sounds best with it?

Spied · 26/10/2020 20:29

Oliver is my favourite.
How about
Aidan
Isaac
Owen
Adam
Jonah
Jacob

Twinkie01 · 26/10/2020 20:42

Otto or Gabriel are my current favourite names.

LottieDot · 26/10/2020 20:51

Oscar
Arthur
Joseph
Henry
Edward
Jacob
Benjamin

whatsbinhappnin · 26/10/2020 20:54

Alasdair or Alistair has a similar sound

RunningFromWaterGhoul · 26/10/2020 20:58

William, Daniel, Frederick or Martin

StayCloseSpooky · 26/10/2020 21:08

Oliver

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2020 21:16

I'd go with Alexander. Its a gorgeous strong masculine but gentle name.
He loves it and she at least likes it. Once he's called that she'll soon grow to love it. I hated my nephews name when my sister first came out with it. I love it now, though.

Other ideas for them.
Thomas
Daniel
Francis
Gabriel
William
Nathan
Nicholas
Max
Andrew
George
Leo
Matthew
Jonathan
