Odette or Alma are ok.
The rest are not, sorry.

Uhtredmumofuhtred · 23/10/2020 16:54

I'm sorry to say I am not keen on any of these names. Belle and Akiko are the only two I like but I would immediately be put off Akiko if you or DD are not Japanese.

Amarilli - no it feels made up

Belle - ok beauty and the beast, bell, bell end

Amabette - no what?

Akiko - yes if you are Japanese only

Lilibet - ok Lily goes gambling

Amabelle or Amabel - no Annabelle is sufficient

Amaluna - no Cirque du Soleil, would prefer to be called Soleil

Odette - ok reason reminds me of Lamar Odom

Alma - ok-no Jessica Alba

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/10/2020 16:59

Amaluna tic
Amabel. Will always be mistaken for Annabelle.
Amarilli. Sounds like a wine
Amabette. Amabette my bottom dollar this is a name you’ve suddenly plucked out of the air.
Akiko. Sounds like Hockey cokey to me, but I do like the sound of it.
Odette. I don’t like it, but It’s passable as a name.
Alma Don’t like it but at least it’s a name
Belle Nice name but I don’t personally like it.
Iilibet. Again like Akiko I do like the sound but it sounds like a brand of Tampax.

Lilibelle I think would be nicer

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/10/2020 17:02

Amarilli - as in the flower I presume.
Belle - of the ball, bell end. It’s ok.
Akiko if you’re of Japanese descent. Otherwise ?
Lilibet nickname for Elizabeth and it’s what the Queen’s family call her, so it makes me think of her.
Odette is ok. French, I’m not keen.
Amabelle or Amabel, Amabette,
Amaluna, are these real names? Sorry not for me. If you like them then nothing we say should sway you.
Alma - old lady name, not fashionable.

These names are all unique, go for it if you like them but expect people to be polarised. It shouldn’t matter though, they will learn to love the name as they love your child.

Eggbaguette · 23/10/2020 17:07

Amanda?

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 23/10/2020 17:16

I like Belle

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 17:19

I am not British, so I know some names might be unusual, but I would like to know if you like the sound of those that you don't know. :-) :-)

This is an usual list. I like that you are brave and willing to think outside of the box! Smile

I like Akiko very much it would be so pretty on a Japanese girl and woman.

How about

Alba
Elva
Una
Clementine
Anais
Anya
Paloma
Nettie
Amarantha
Amarissa
Alize

florascotia2 · 23/10/2020 17:30

The flower is Amaryllis, with an 's' on the end. The name is spelled the same way. It's quite nice but very frilly, if that matters.
Amabel is a genuine old name, but today it might be confused with Mabel or Annabel.
Akiko is a nice Japanese name.
Odette. French WWII heroine. Swan Lake ballerina.
Amabette - a quick Google says its a horse or a handbag.
Amaluna = 'Moon Lover'. Really?
Lilibet = the Queen's personal, private childhood nickname. A bit cringey to copy, perhaps?
Alma = According to Behind the Name, this became popular after the (very bloody) battle of Alma (1854). Not a nice association?
Belle It's either short for something like Isabelle, or a French word that means 'beautiful'. If the latter, perhaps a bit much for a child to live up to?

florascotia2 · 23/10/2020 17:42

OP Different countries and different cultures have totally different ways of naming. Context is terribly important when talking about names - and indeed about all words!
If the names you are considering have particular meanings to you personally or in another culture or tradition, then it would be very, very helpful to know. No-one wants to hurt another poster's feelings by commenting on names out of context.

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 17:52

No worries, I am not offended in any way! It is good to know what people think :-)
The baby will be black African.
Some of these names are unusual in the Uk and some are unique, but that is what we are looking for. I just would like to know if people like the sound of them, even if they never heard of them.
I welcome any comment :-)

By the way, Amarilli is a unique Latin name and it is not Amaryllis, although I know people will think of that name!

If you are after unique and unusual names how about:

Lesidi
Anika
Sade
Zola
Ashanti
Nala
Rosanna
Sanaa
Oni
Akhona

Felicity88 · 23/10/2020 18:02

Or Lesedi rather. It means light which I think is beautiful.

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 18:10

Thank you for suggesting them, but I am not keen on these.

florascotia2 · 23/10/2020 18:12

OP Thank you so much. I was very worried that I'd offended you.

Amarilli is the Italian version of Amaryllis, which is a name that occurs in Latin poetry (Vergil's Eclogues). It's based on the Greek 'Amarysso' which has the lovely meaning 'sparkling' . There are some beautiful old songs that include the name, such as this

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 18:17

yep, correct :-)

OP posts:
missmouse101 · 23/10/2020 18:18

Amabel is nice.

Bummsbet · 23/10/2020 18:20

Amabelle or Amabel
Odette
Alma

These are ok. The rest are bizarre. Unique isn't always good.

Kanaloa · 23/10/2020 18:31

I really like Belle. I’m not keen on the others.

Bamboobo · 23/10/2020 18:37

Really love Akiko and Amaluna!

sesquipedalia · 23/10/2020 18:46

I like Amabel and have come across it before. Will be mistaken for Annabel if that bothers you though

MoonDelay · 23/10/2020 18:55

I really like Akiko too

ivfbeenbusy · 23/10/2020 18:59

Amarilli - bloody awful

Belle - nice

Amabette - even more blood awful

Akiko - terrible. Sounds like a martial arts

Lillibet- not a fan. Sounds like you have a lisp when saying it

Amabelle or Amabel - horrendous. Spelling names "wrong" just makes you come across as illiterate

Amaluna - see above

Odette - ok

Alma - ok
