Throckmorton

My first DS is due in December (already have 3 girls) DH really wants to name him Throckmorton after his cousin. I am concerned that Throckmorton doesn't really work in the UK, ( DH is American) should I insist its a middle name and use a 'British' first name instead. Our daughters all have classic 'Elizabeth' type names. What do you think?

@Tinty

Tell DH to introduce himself to people over the next couple of months as Throckmorton. Then see how long he still thinks it’s a good name.
yes, that's an excellent idea. please don't do this to your child. what about Mortimer instead, sounds like a professor and quite unusual.

It's an alternative to John Thomas...

^ Throckmorton sign, also known as John Thomas sign, refers to when the penis points in the direction of unilateral disease, typically of the pelvis or hip.
Throckmorton sign is a slang term used humorously by medical students and residents.
According to the first serious study of the sign published in 1988, the sign is less accurate than tossing a coin 2. This finding was supported by another subsequent study and also a meta-analysis 5,7.

A lot of English people will think his name is Throgmorton.

I don't like the name anyway.

SheSaidHummingbird · 11/10/2020 00:40

Veto.

WhereYouLeftIt · 11/10/2020 00:43

No. For the love of God, just no.

You might as well call your son Penis Dick and be done with it!
@Ohalrightthen Yeah to be fair I think any reference to "Morty" will probably end up with a "Pickle Rick" joke as well (though that meme's already on it's deathbed, tbf). Grin
Grin How about Bolloxofbullshitton instead?

grassisjeweled · 11/10/2020 02:33

I'm literally watching 'Elizabeth' on Netflix and Bess introduces herself as Elizabeth Throckmorton

Shock
ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/10/2020 08:15

Very good, OP.

If you’re looking for classic English names with ancestral heft and gravitas, you can’t go wrong with Balonz.

August20 · 11/10/2020 08:23

Cocky Throcky. Has a ring to it.

Dannicalifornia · 11/10/2020 12:29

Thank you for all your replies! Have shown this thread to DH, he has now agreed that Throckmorton will be a middle name. We have now decided on the first name Matthew. Smile

Matthew is lovely - congratulations on your baby and persuadable husband GrinGrin

feministfemme · 11/10/2020 12:40

Congratulations! Tell the hubby MN gives a big thumbs up for the name "Matthew" Grin

redvest · 11/10/2020 12:42

Presumably he loves his son? If so he has a funny way of showing it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/10/2020 12:45

I was going to say it reminded me of the (slightly thuggish) cat in the Chrestomanci books, although that's spelt Throgmorten.

MJMG2015 · 11/10/2020 19:03

Matthew is nice.

dementedma · 11/10/2020 19:10

Matthew is nice and underused these days. Good choice

billybagpuss · 11/10/2020 19:12

Was he not the one who plotted to assassinate Elizabeth I?

im sorry I dont like it it sounds an Angry Name and its a mouthful too say

Racoonworld · 11/10/2020 23:10

Sorry but that name makes me laugh, it can’t be a real name surely?? Please don’t use it even as a middle name your child will get bullied.

Racoonworld · 11/10/2020 23:10

Matthew is a great choice though

Twillow · 11/10/2020 23:23

Even as a middle name, a term that refers to the penis pointing in the direction of an injury is cruel. Use Morton if you must.
