Throckmorton

My first DS is due in December (already have 3 girls) DH really wants to name him Throckmorton after his cousin. I am concerned that Throckmorton doesn't really work in the UK, ( DH is American) should I insist its a middle name and use a 'British' first name instead. Our daughters all have classic 'Elizabeth' type names. What do you think?

Matthew is lovely.

Google Throckmorton radiology and don’t use the name at all even as a middle name!

Stick with Matthew and find another middle name!
Matthew Morton?

katmarie · 12/10/2020 08:53

Throckmorton was also the largest burial site for the animals slaughtered during foot and mouth in 2001, something like 100000 animals buried there. I wouldn't want to name my kid after that!

Topseyt · 12/10/2020 09:02

Matthew is a nice name. It's good that you are going with that as a first name.

Throckmorton is, I'm afraid, utterly hideous as a name for a person. I would even veto its use as a middle name. Every time it gets out at school that it is one of his name's it will be an embarrassment to him and a potential source of amusement and entertainment to the other children.

My DD has a friend with a very outlandish name. He is totally embarrassed by it. When he introduces himself to people he always adds "my parents hated me when I was born", which I find so sad. I always wonder why they did it. What must they have been thinking?

Don't. Even veto it as a middle name. It is that horrendous.

If he likes place type names Greenockmorton? OK is a football club but he may like it?

ErrolTheDragon · 12/10/2020 11:01

I think the OP has achieved something remarkable - gone from something completely unacceptable as a forename name to an unexceptionable one which (almost uniquely for this topic) no one can criticise.

CandyLeBonBon · 12/10/2020 11:03

This can't be real surely?

AdoreTheBeach · 12/10/2020 11:59

I’m from America. I’d never heard of Throckmorton as a first name.

Of course they could use as a middle name. You don’t have to register your children in school detailing their middle name so no one needs to know, hence no bullying due to middle name.

PigletJohn · 12/10/2020 14:01

I’m from England. I’d never heard of Throckmorton as a first name either.

And I was surprised when I found out that Throgmorton Street was named after a man called Throckmorton.

FelicityPike · 12/10/2020 14:06

Matthew is a fine name.

bizzers · 12/10/2020 14:12

Sorry, but it sounds like something Jacob Rees-Mogg would name his child Confused

MidnightFlit · 12/10/2020 14:31

Having spent the last few weeks on Ancestry, tearing my hair out over many generations of my unimaginative ancesters all with the same bloody two names, can I just say that throwing in a random Throckmorton as a middle name will help future family-tree tracers no end.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/10/2020 14:37

Is he very close to his cousin?

Iheardarumour · 12/10/2020 14:40

forgetthehousework · 12/10/2020 14:51

I suppose this would be OK if the OP has missed out three vital words before 'cousin' - the three words being 'very rich childless'.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 12/10/2020 15:34

The PP making genuine suggestions are kind but as ‘cousin Throckmorton’ is an internet meme knowyourmeme.com/memes/cousin-throckmorton either OP is pulling our leg or her DH is pulling hers Grin

Firebird83 · 12/10/2020 22:02

I think this is a joke thread!

MadameBlobby · 13/10/2020 00:44

That is horrendous, poor kid

Tell your OH to change his own name to Throckmorton if he likes it that much

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 13/10/2020 16:55

Matthew is lovely.

Throckmorton is hideous and your DC will be teased mercilessly should anyone ever discover it's on his birth certificate as part of his name. Tell your DH to change his own name if he likes it so much and to not saddle your poor child with it.

Imissmoominmama · 13/10/2020 16:57

I blurted when I read the thread title. You are kidding ... aren’t you?
