What are your thoughts on the name Ethel?
Is it too old fashioned?

Ethel is awful. Truly awful.

Between this and the Maud or Mary thread, there's a lot of love for old lady names on MN.

Gwendolyn is ok. Has a few shortenings at least.

@missmouse101

Utterly hideous. Along with Ada, Mave, Dorothy, Edith, Margaret, Mabel and Gladys.
I run (certainly pre COVID!) a couple of baby groups, and have met at least one baby by each of those names - except Gladys.

Much more surprising when I meet a Lucy, Hannah, Joanna...

@StephenKong

It's on the same lines as Mabel, Beryl, Edith, Agnes, etc. Old lady, yes. Chic? No way.
I know a little girl called Agatha and another called Ethel. I think Edith is beautiful!
