What are your thoughts on the name Ethel?
Is it too old fashioned?

Reminds me of elephants. No idea why.

PurplePansy05 · 23/09/2020 23:01

I love Ethel ❤️

Definitely nicer than Gwendolyn/Gwen/Gwendoline.

S111n20 · 23/09/2020 23:03

My son age 10 has a friend called gwendolyn personally I don’t like it. Ethel is beautiful trendy 2020 name.

Tillygetsit · 23/09/2020 23:04

I much prefer Gwendolyn. Ethelis so frumpy.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 23/09/2020 23:05

I suppose NN Effy is ok.

Much prefer Edith tho. Or Alice. 🤨

shittingmysel · 23/09/2020 23:08

It was on my list it got a very mixed response

itsjakeandamy · 23/09/2020 23:09

I'm not a massive fan of old-lady-chic names (other than Iris. I love that) but I think Ethel fits perfectly within that genre. It has a pretty nickname in Ettie and the whole name sounds good - a strong sounding name without sounding harsh.
Gwendolyn just reminds me of the awful character in Mallory Towers.

StCharlotte · 23/09/2020 23:13

Ethel is really scraping the barrel of old-lady names, second only to Edna (my mum's name which she hated). All these poor poor 21st century little girls...

You did ask, sorry.

MIL is Gwendolyn, always Gwen. Meh.

RaininSummer · 23/09/2020 23:16

My first thought was no but as I said it a few times it grew on me. Gwendoline is frightful however.

user1493494961 · 23/09/2020 23:27

Don't look Ethel! (Showing my age!)

Marlena1 · 23/09/2020 23:28

What about Edel?

Antonin · 24/09/2020 00:11

Reminds me of the GLums and Ron Glum’s “Why Eth?” etc

Enough4me · 24/09/2020 00:15

Ethel sounds so old, what about Beth (Bethany, Elizabeth)?

Gwen sounds ok, but I prefer Wren.

RubixMania · 24/09/2020 00:17

Personally I don’t feel the World is yet ready to have scores of little Ethel’s running about again 🙈

Bellabluea · 24/09/2020 00:27

Please no.
And I had a wonderful granny named Ethel. It should remain in the past.
Lily Allen has one I believe.

StephenKong · 24/09/2020 00:30

It's on the same lines as Mabel, Beryl, Edith, Agnes, etc. Old lady, yes. Chic? No way.

ZoeCM · 24/09/2020 00:41

I'm sure I've read that when researchers study the effects of going through life with an unpleasant name, Ethel is one of the ones they use. (Others include Mildred, Gertrude and Bertha.)

sorryforswearing · 24/09/2020 00:42

Awful names.

aruba786 · 24/09/2020 01:50

Prefer Gwendolyn to Ethel

Kokeshi123 · 24/09/2020 01:59

I really don't like it. It makes me think of something acrid-smelling that's listed on the side of a chemistry set.

Strokethefurrywall · 24/09/2020 01:59

^^ This. Also include Beryl and Maude.

VickySunshine · 24/09/2020 02:00

Sorry, truly dreadful.

missmouse101 · 24/09/2020 02:16

Utterly hideous. Along with Ada, Mave, Dorothy, Edith, Margaret, Mabel and Gladys.

MercyBodle · 24/09/2020 02:33

I really can't see any charm in either of those names, sorry. While Iris, Ada and Violet, of a similar vintage as Ethel, have re-surfaced and work well, Ethel just seems drab to me.

Gwendolyn is way too frilly and fussy for me. Interestingly this was confirmed in the recent series Malory Towers based on Enid Blyton books: Gwendolyn is the fussy, stuck-up girl. Well-named on Blyton's part! I do think Gwen, Gwenllian and Gwenno are rather appealing though.

TenShortStories · 24/09/2020 02:46

I much prefer Esther and Edith, which have a similar but less clunky vibe. Gwendolyn is OK, Wendy could be a good nn.
