Baby girl name thoughts

Hi all,

This is my first time posting, however I have been a stalker of the site for many years. I am finally pregnant (albeit very early days) but am already thinking of names for little one. We have almost agreed on a potential boy name but girls are seeming more difficult.

My partner and his family have very unusual/uncommon names, I do like this, however also want to choose a name that is wearable and suitable for all ages.

We like Winter nn Winnie although I’m worried how this would be perceived on a baby born in spring?! I also like Cleo, Effie and Ivy. Partner is very keen on Navy but I feel this is too far.

Opinions and suggestions of similar styled names would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance:)

Lovely names! I’m not massively keen on Winnie, this will sound strange but I always think Winnie the witch? Ivy’s really sweet. Not massively into Cleo and Effie is also sweet.

What about Marnie? Or Lennie? I’m pregnant with #2, we don’t know the sex yet but if it’s a girl I’ll probably go for Nancy. It’s my absolute fave girls name!

Love Cleo and Ivy. How about:

Elsie
Orla
Maeve
Lana
Callie
Lyla
Flora
Talia

FluffyEggsontoast · 20/09/2020 22:52

Winter nn Winnie is gorgeous and wouldnt matter what time of year baby is born in

fn1646 · 20/09/2020 22:53

Navy is a beautiful name! I've never heard it before but it's stunning

Tavannach · 20/09/2020 22:57

I love Cleo.
'Winter' for a Spring baby? It's okay, but Im not crazy about it
Navy sounds like a boy's name, if it's being used as a name. Wouldn't use it.

@iloveyoubutilovememore Thank you for your reply and suggestions, definitely up my street. Nancy is a lovely name, best wishes for you and little one!x

@may3120 Thank you. We had actually touched on the name Maeve today and quite like it as a middle name. Lana is lovely and I’ve just suggested this to my partner x

Like Cleo, Effie and Winnie
What about Coco, Tansy, Bronte, Blythe, Sasha, Cassia, Vaila, Colette, Delphine

RouxLou · 20/09/2020 23:05

@FluffyEggsontoast @fn1646 @Tavannach Thank you so much for your comments, sometimes seeing others write the name out/their opinion really affirmes your thoughts. I definitely feel like Navy is too far out of my comfort zone but also don’t want him to think i shoot down all his suggestions, trying to get a happy medium x

Navy is awful, Ivy is nice, Effie and Cleo OK.

Kote · 20/09/2020 23:06

I like Ivy best out of your names. Ivy Winter would be lovely.

Enough4me · 20/09/2020 23:07

Cleotilde (Cleo)

custardbear · 20/09/2020 23:15

Marina?
Navy isn't a name.

RouxLou · 20/09/2020 23:17

@Kote LOVE that combination. Thank you!! X

Fennelandlovage · 20/09/2020 23:31

Love Cleo of the ones you suggested.

Tavannach · 20/09/2020 23:39

If blue is a factor -

Sapphire
Iris
Violet
Teal (not sure how I feel about that and I'm suggesting it!)

There's also Indigo but again sounds more like a boy's name to me, although less so than Navy.

Tavannach · 20/09/2020 23:40

or Skye

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/09/2020 01:06

Cleo is nice. I also quite like Navy. Why is it any less acceptable than Ruby Amber or Jade. I really don’t like Effie or Winter
Other ideas.
Hazel. Ellen. Iris. Saskia. Keira. Mabel. Fern.
Briony. Elsa.

DramaAlpaca · 21/09/2020 01:08

Cleo is lovely and Ivy is fine.

I don't like Winter or Effie, and Navy is just daft.

occa · 21/09/2020 01:14

I adore the name Winter and would have had it for DD if she hadn't been born in June Grin.

I quite like Effie, but do think Ivy Winter together sounds a bit like a Harlequin romance writer type pseudonym.

MaverickDanger · 21/09/2020 01:14

I know a Verity known as Ettie - Verity Winter is cute.

Ivy Winter not only sounds very festive, but is almost the name of a drag queen.

Ojj37 · 21/09/2020 03:26

I’m not big on Winter, just because it’s not my sort of name, but personally, I don’t think I’d bet an eyelid about when one was born. I know plenty of April/May/Junes not born in those months and would never see that as a big deal.

zigaziga · 21/09/2020 06:58

I also quite like Navy. Why is it any less acceptable than Ruby Amber or Jade

Because Navy is the word for the sea military as well as a shade of blue?! Seriously half of people who hear a child called Navy will be thinking of warships or (even worse?!) will be singing “In the Navy!” in their heads.

CatteStreet · 21/09/2020 06:59

I like Awwlookatmybabyspider's suggestions (though decisively don't share her liking for Navy). Briony is one I haven't heard for a long while but is really quite nice. Bethany seems to have passed its peak of popularity - maybe worth considering?

Effie is very nicknamey and makes me think of Effi Briest (literary character for whom things did not go well, putting it mildly). Cleo is really nice. Ivy is very on trend right now but I think is less likely to stand the test of time than some other granny chic names.

Not keen at all on Winter and don't understand the love for it.

zigaziga · 21/09/2020 07:23

Effie is very nicknamey and makes me think of Effi Briest at last! It did for me too when someone was talking about Effie a few weeks a go.
