Girl name help! Florence or Isla?

Hubby wanted a boy and I think he convinced us all that baby must be a boy (we didn’t find out the sex) so we kind of focussed much more on boys names. Anyway, baby is now here and is a beautiful baby girl BUT we haven’t decided on a name.

Although husband isn’t particularly helpful on this (and my hormones aren’t helping) we’ve got it down to 2 names: Florence (after my great grandma) or Isla (for the Scottish connection).

A few years ago I was certain I would use Isla if I ever had a girl but it seems to have become very popular and 4 friends (albeit not close friends) have called their girls Isla which has put me off a bit, not because I’m desperate to have a unique name as names become popular for a reason but it seems a tad less special now. I’m also not sure it goes with our surname Green. I love the name Florence but am not too keen on Flo and worry it’s maybe a bit twee / stuffy.

Which do you prefer?

First congratulations on the birth of a perfect many girl 👶💕. Then I absolutely love the name Florence x

Both are lovely! I think it sounds like you do prefer Isla so I would go with that, Isla Florence?

RedRumTheHorse · 16/09/2020 08:28

I know two Florences under 5, and as I live next to a nursery and 2 primary schools heard that name a few times. Oddly not heard the name Isla even though it is now very common.

I only ever met one person called "Flora" and she is around 50.

AcrobaticCardigan · 16/09/2020 08:29

Florence for sure.

RedRumTheHorse · 16/09/2020 08:30

Oh and Isabelle and it's variations are sooo common for girls under 5.

Anappleaday1 · 16/09/2020 14:15

Congratulations op. They are both lovely names, I don't think you can go wrong with either! I've always loved Isla and the popularity hasn't taken the shine off for me at all, but Florence is also really lovely. I do think Florence Green sounds better than Isla Green.
Florence seems to be rising in popularity quite quickly, I imagine by the time your dd starts school there would be a similar number of Islas and Florences, so I wouldn't necessarily choose Florence just based on popularity. I do agree with you on nn Flo, but I think there are other nn options so you would just have to go with one of those before Flo became set (although you can't always control these things)
Whichever name you choose as a first, the other works really well as a middle name.

Florence is beautiful. Flo might grow on you, or she may become a floss or flossy. Or even a Ren. I know a Florence who is known as Ren. It’s cute and different.
Congratulations on your little girl!

BoudicasBoudoir · 16/09/2020 15:49

Florence is only slightly less popular than Isla.

Edenember · 16/09/2020 15:58

I like both but definitely Florence. Beautiful name.

Stormshinestar · 16/09/2020 20:53

Thanks for your replies everyone, we are going with Florence!

Prefer Florence. I had a great aunt Florence who we always called Florrie

helpmum2003 · 16/09/2020 20:56

I love both names, would marginally prefer Florence. Congratulations!

BlueJay99 · 16/09/2020 20:59

Florence is beautiful and timeless

I think Florence goes better with your surname but both names are lovely
