Girl name help! Florence or Isla?

Hubby wanted a boy and I think he convinced us all that baby must be a boy (we didn’t find out the sex) so we kind of focussed much more on boys names. Anyway, baby is now here and is a beautiful baby girl BUT we haven’t decided on a name.

Although husband isn’t particularly helpful on this (and my hormones aren’t helping) we’ve got it down to 2 names: Florence (after my great grandma) or Isla (for the Scottish connection).

A few years ago I was certain I would use Isla if I ever had a girl but it seems to have become very popular and 4 friends (albeit not close friends) have called their girls Isla which has put me off a bit, not because I’m desperate to have a unique name as names become popular for a reason but it seems a tad less special now. I’m also not sure it goes with our surname Green. I love the name Florence but am not too keen on Flo and worry it’s maybe a bit twee / stuffy.

Which do you prefer?

I much prefer Isla personally. Congratulations on your new addition Smile

Whatsyourflava · 15/09/2020 20:18

Both really really lovely and finding it hard to pick as you have a connection to both
Maybe Florence?

Your husband will quickly move past the gender disappointment I hope - things become much easier once the baby smiles and you're able to connect. It's normal to have those feelings Though

Oneandabean · 15/09/2020 20:32

I prefer Florence but it’s become very popular as well if that bothers you. Isla gets lost in lots of other similar sounding names

itsjakeandamy · 15/09/2020 20:42

I prefer Florence but I love Florence Isla as FN and MN!

bearlyactive · 15/09/2020 20:43

I love Florence too

DramaAlpaca · 15/09/2020 20:45

Years ago I used to love Isla, but have gone off it a bit now because it's become so popular.

So I'd choose Florence. It goes better with your surname as well. Oh, and it's neither twee nor stuffy.

thecognoscenti · 15/09/2020 20:47

I'd go for Florence. Isla is nice but a little bit limp I think.

Spied · 15/09/2020 20:50

I don't like Isla with Green. Sorry.
Florence Green is fine but I despise Flo.
I think I'd have to keep looking.

We have named our little girl Isla beautiful name x
Outwithreason · 15/09/2020 20:53

Flora? Ailsa? Isabel, Isabella?

tornadoalley · 15/09/2020 20:53

They're both beautiful. Florence can be shortened to Flora if the full name is too much.

Napqueen1234 · 15/09/2020 20:56

Florence can be so many things! Floss flossie flo floosle flopsy (can you tell I have a niece with this name and a penchant for nicknames).

She’s an absolute joy and ignited a huge love for the name florence for me.

Curlysusie · 15/09/2020 20:58

MummytoMatildaX · 15/09/2020 22:23

Florence Isla would be lovely.

ButterflyRuns · 15/09/2020 23:45

I'd go with Florence

AdaColeman · 15/09/2020 23:49

Another vote for Florence, more flowing and gentle than Isla which sounds quite harsh to me.

Congratulations! Thanks Thanks

MercyBodle · 16/09/2020 01:17

I prefer Florence. I'm put off by the strong popularity of Isla and I don't think it's great with your surname.

latheritup · 16/09/2020 01:57

Florence Grin

Jj2431 · 16/09/2020 02:47

Isla all the way

Pinkychilla · 16/09/2020 03:34

Florence with nn Florrie

Craddle64 · 16/09/2020 04:12

Isla

greenteafiend · 16/09/2020 05:27

Florence. Isla is nice but there are so many of them. I don't think FIG is the best acronym though, so maybe not Isla as a middle name either.

Firebird83 · 16/09/2020 06:04

Florence

HappyDinosaur · 16/09/2020 06:11

Florence, Isla is a bit naff to me.
