Just Bill?

Hello, DS2 will come in a fortnights time. His two sisters are Emily and Alice, brother is George. I would be ok with William on the birth certificate if it wasn’t for the awful nickname Will (will you come here, will you do that etc), as I only liking Bill/Billy. So do people think it’s fine to just put Bill on the birth certificate? Thanks Smile

Bill or Billy is much better than Will or Willy!

Just call him Bill.

Bwlch · 07/09/2020 20:10

Put William on the certificate, then he can decide what he wants to be called.

poppydaisys · 07/09/2020 21:08

I agree that Will or Willy are not great nicknames. Eg Will Will come? Grin

Bill is fine as a stand-alone name imo. It bears little resemblance to William. And it might be confusing to have two initials W and B..?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/09/2020 00:49

Shame you can't call him Billiam!

There's no law in the UK forbidding it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/09/2020 00:57

Willy we know about Grin, but I've never personally observed anybody making rubbish jokes linking it to the verb 'will'. It's common and unremarkable enough that it would never occur to most people that there might be some terrible comedy mileage in it.

Girls and women known as 'Cat' for short don't keep getting halfwits asking them if they eat Whiskas or enter their front door through a little flap - do they?!?! Exactly the same for boys and men called Thomas, but known as Tom - nobody thinks to make the same asinine 'cat' jokes, do they?

Why would tedious clowns be any less likely to ask Will if he 'will do something' or if he's made a will than they would be to ask Bill if he's paid his gas bill or if he has a duck's facial feature?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/09/2020 00:58

making rubbish jokes linking it

'it' being 'Will', in case that was confusing.

In fifteen years of teaching I’ve probably taught about forty Williams who go by Will and can confirm that none of the predicted taunts are a thing. Kids bully and tease each other over a million things but names are rarely one of them.

FizzyGreenWater · 08/09/2020 08:50

Oh no no no not when his siblings all have proper names! He won't thank you for that. And what if he hates Bill? There's nowhere to go with it - he can't shorten Bill. FWIW I don't like Bill much, and think of a bird's bill.

For every 'will you come here' there's a 'I'll get the bill/nothing but bills in the post today! etc...?

Grufallosfriends · 08/09/2020 10:35

I think neither Will/Willy nor Bill/Billy are great names. Will will you pay the bill...!

Is there any other name you love?

LittleTiger007 · 09/09/2020 15:38

Put William on the birth certificate if you like and call him Bill. It’s fab. Timeless. People will follow your lead and call him Bill/Billy

foxtiger · 11/09/2020 23:17

I don't actually like Bill or Billy very much, but I can more easily imagine Billy on a birth certificate than Bill. I've known at least two boys who were "just" Billy.

Smellbellina · 11/09/2020 23:19

My dsis called her ds a full name with a nickname in mind, he was having none of it and had decided his own nickname by the time he was 2!
I don’t think you should call your kid Bill though.

Diverseduvet · 11/09/2020 23:21

Poor kid

Polkasquare · 11/09/2020 23:23

I've never thought of the name Will in terms of "will you...". But Bill is a cute name!

BuffaloMozzerella · 12/09/2020 14:07

We have a William in the family who is only known as Billy. No one has ever called him Will - it would be really strange.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/09/2020 14:10

Bill is awful, even on an adult Bill is awful.

Prettybluepigeons · 12/09/2020 14:11

A bill I'd something you ask for sh the end of a meal

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/09/2020 14:12

J hate when people come of to these threads and say things like you could call him Billy, and then when he's older he could shorten it to Bill Hmm nick names generally don't work like that.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/09/2020 14:14

Bill is awful

daisypond · 12/09/2020 14:19

Bill is horrid. Electricity bill, gas bill, etc. Hardly a name to fill you with joy.
Will is much better - will means determination, energy, etc.
Call him William, Bill for short.

Lavenderblues · 12/09/2020 16:38

A bill is something you ask for sh the end of a meal

And a will is something you write before you die.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/09/2020 19:27

A Will is something you write years before you die. Practical word. Sensible. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Positive. The

autumnkate · 12/09/2020 21:46

I LOVE Bill but I think you need William on the birth certificate

autumnkate · 12/09/2020 21:47

Much prefer it to Will

Buttercup54321 · 12/09/2020 22:16

Utility bill. Have you paid the bill.
Just awful.
Much prefer William.
