Can you have Laura and Flora?

Currently 20 weeks pregnant and just found out it's a girl. I love Flora for a name, but my husband thinks it's too similar to my name, Laura. Is he right?

I think they're too similar, people often mishear Laura as Maura, Orla, Lorna etc (maybe I mumble) if you add the confusion over mother and daughter name she may spend her life correcting people

scrivette · 28/08/2020 21:44

I think for siblings it wouldn't work but for mother and daughter it's not really an issue.

EnidMatilda · 28/08/2020 21:47

I think it's too similar.

RuthW · 28/08/2020 22:34

Fine for mother and daughter. Not fine for siblings.

BeMorePacific · 28/08/2020 22:38

Fine for mother and daughter in my opinion! I really love the name Flora xxx

MoverOfPaper · 28/08/2020 22:40

I’m afraid I think they sound too similar. Do you like the name Fleur?

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 28/08/2020 22:43

Your DH is right.

Rachellow · 28/08/2020 22:44

I think they're quite different tbh! In all honesty, Flora is a lot posher than Laura. The Fl is stressed so I don't really think you'll mistake it for Laura. I wouldn't do Laura + Lauren/Lara but Flora sounds fine.

QueenBlueberries · 28/08/2020 22:46

I know a dad who is called Phil and son is Felix, and a mum is Maud with daughter Maddie (this is one family).

I think it's fine for mother and daughter, two sisters wouldn't work so well.

I think it would be OK for Mum and Daughter. I know siblings Emma and Gemma and also Isla and Ailsa, now they are similar!

NataliaOsipova · 28/08/2020 22:49

I agree - not for siblings, but fine for mother and daughter. Especially if you sign your cards etc as Laura, DH and Flora (rather than DH, Laura and Flora).

ThrawnCow · 28/08/2020 22:52

No.

JoanJosephJim · 28/08/2020 22:55

Don't rhyme your names. My friend's husband is Alan and their son is Aaron, when she says one name both of them respond, especially if she says Alan the son always thinks it is him. She says it was a mistake. Grin

This isn't just about signing birthday cards this is someone saying Laura and Flora will be coming over later. Don't do it.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2020 22:56

A bit too close, I think.

Dinkum01 · 28/08/2020 22:57

Flora doesn't sound middle-class yet cutesy in the way you think, OP. It's just the name of a margarine. Just think of something else.

Deadringer · 28/08/2020 22:58

I think they are a bit samey. What about Florrie, or Fleur?

somersetsinger · 28/08/2020 23:02

When the three of you are together and your husband says one of your names, it might be tricky to work out who he is addressing.

Me and DD have this problem and only one syllable from our names is similar. It annoys me, although perhaps not enough to have chosen a different name. Maybe I just need to buy DH elocution lessons for Christmas.

WeEE · 28/08/2020 23:02

I think it's fine.
Love the name Flora too!

Tillygetsit · 28/08/2020 23:27

A bit too close for me.

badg3r · 28/08/2020 23:30

Hmm phonetically it's just your name with a f at the start, I would say a bit too common. Unless you call her Flo as a nickname but that kind of defeats the point.

badg3r · 28/08/2020 23:30

I bit too much in common that should read!!

thisislovelyme · 28/08/2020 23:33

No way, sounds comical!

Yankathebear · 28/08/2020 23:35

I’m not sure that op said that it was middle class or ‘cutesy’.

I like it op! Siblings would be a big fat no but mother and daughter is okay.

alexdgr8 · 28/08/2020 23:41

@ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore

Your DH is right.
agree. sounds like a music hall act. also flora just sounds like margarine, cert not posh. what about Florence, Fiona, Millicent, Camilla, Clarice, Clementine, all of which are classy.
Firebird83 · 28/08/2020 23:47

I think it’s fine for mother and daughter.
