Can you have Laura and Flora?

Currently 20 weeks pregnant and just found out it's a girl. I love Flora for a name, but my husband thinks it's too similar to my name, Laura. Is he right?

Mother and daughter - absolitely fine. Lovely names.

I know married couples called Bill (m) and Phil (f), Sandy (m) and Mandy, and even Leslie and Lesley. Rhyming is the way forward!

Ginandplatonic · 28/08/2020 23:53

I though you meant siblings and was about to say “hell no”!

Mother and daughter is tricky and I don’t think there’s an absolute answer. What if you imagine yourself walking into a baby group and saying “Hi I’m Laura and this is Flora”. Are you fine with that or does it make you cringe? There’s your answer.

Once she’s school age there will be few occasions for saying your names together like that. I can’t remember the last time I said “I’m x this is y” about my kids.

I do think it's a bit to similar... what about Florence?

sunyla · 28/08/2020 23:56

but honestly if you love it, go for it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Somethingkindaoooo · 28/08/2020 23:58

" Just whacked an F on your name"

You could try other options...

Flouise

Flottie

Felizabeth

Somethingkindaoooo · 28/08/2020 23:59

Actually though, i can't look at those names together without seeing ' Flora and Fauna'

MJMG2015 · 29/08/2020 00:07

I wouldn't.

Even if you don't mind introducing yourself as 'I'm Laura & this is F'laura' Your DH is the one who will spend his life sounding tongue tied.

Yes, Laura & Flora ....

& Calling Out to one and having the other answer

They're too similar.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 29/08/2020 00:11

I have one of those names. When my husband suggested Nora, I laughed out loud and asked if to say my name and the baby’s potential name in a sentence and he saw why I was laughing. I also said I’d be happy to name her Nora, but only if we named the next one Bavid. He got the point.

Tavannach · 29/08/2020 00:18

How would you have felt as a teenager if your DM had been called Flora?

4kidmom · 29/08/2020 01:02

I think if you love it, you can get by with it. I do think your husband is the one who will be needing to deal with the rhyming names and it could be confusing for your daughter.

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2020 01:06

I think no

Not least because I just think margarine.

Sorry.

Sellorwait6 · 29/08/2020 03:16

I think they’re a bit similar. I know someone with a dog named Flora. For absolutely ages I thought the dog was called Laura! (Even though that isn’t a very common name for a dog Grin)

But then, men name their children after them. So if you want to, go for it. Might make it confusing when people call either of your names in the house though!

Onestepup · 29/08/2020 07:24

Too similar IMO.

duckoutofwater · 29/08/2020 07:40

Thanks all, that's been helpful. Think we will try to come up with something else to be safe 🙂

The name Flora is lovely. I know one in her late 20s now. Beautiful person, name really suits her and she never got bullied with margarine or spreading comments at school.
Saying that they are quite similar - I think you'd have to use nn about the house a lot to make it work eg Flo

twirlywooly · 29/08/2020 07:46

Florence could be a solution?

KetoPenguin · 29/08/2020 07:52

I think it's fine but if your DH objects maybe have it as a middle name.

VenusClapTrap · 29/08/2020 08:52

I had exactly this problem and ruled it out. Great shame - Flora is such a beautiful name.

Sunflowers24 · 29/08/2020 08:56

Way too similar- the only difference is the F at the beginning.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 29/08/2020 12:18

My name rhymes with my mum’s (in a similar way to Laura/Flora). It’s never been an issue... don’t let it put you off if you really like the name.

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2020 13:12

Flora is lovely.

namenerd · 30/08/2020 10:51

I think it's too similar for siblings but for mother and daughter I think it's really cute 😍

MikeUniformMike · 30/08/2020 11:01

You will be 'Mum and Flora', 'Flora and I' or 'You and Flora' a lot of the time.

I know a woman whose mum has the same name, and a mum and daughter with very similar names (not but along the lines of Holly and Mollie), and siblings called John and Jane (there are other siblings).
Not an issue after you get over the initial 'That's a bit similar'.

Unseeliequeen · 30/08/2020 11:10

Mum and daughter combo yes, sib set no.

JanewaysBun · 30/08/2020 13:29

Fine. I can't remember the last time I heard the sentence Janeway and Janeway'smum
