Is Imogen that bad?

I think Imogen is a beautiful name and it's top of the list if we have a girl (i'm due in March). But why do so many dislike it? It's making me want to take it off the list!

Don't like it

Hirewiredays · 24/08/2020 10:58

I just called my three week old Imogen. I am floored by the amount of people saying how much they love the name and how beautiful it is. My in-laws are hard to please and they love it. It's a beautiful name. Go for it!

EggyPegg · 24/08/2020 11:32

@Aria20

I love Imogen! Really wanted it for dd but DH hated it, said it reminded him of a character off Big Brother who slept with a famous footballer years ago... I said it was a ridiculous association but he couldn't get past it!
My DH wouldn't let me have Joseph because he associated it with the scene in Last Boy Scout where Bruce Willis says 'he calls me Joseph'. I told him that was a pretty niche association, but he wasn't having it.

Though he did then agree to James, which is the name mentioned literally the line before the Joseph one in the same scene so 🤷‍♀️

It's not my cup of tea but I can never put my finger on why. Imogen and also Freya I just can't like no matter how many lovely ones I meet. Don't let others put you off though as everyone has their own personal prefences

HeronLanyon · 24/08/2020 15:10

hirewire congrats. Beautiful name.

Whatsyourflava · 24/08/2020 15:44

A beautiful name and one of my favourites. Such a classic but also very underused these days if you look at the statistics. Love it. Congratulations @Hirewiredays , so glad it's even passed the in law test! Can't say I'm surprised, it is a lovely name with many good qualities

Hirewiredays · 24/08/2020 17:34

@Whatsyourflava @HeronLanyon

Thank you for your lovely comments! 😘😘

shesellsseashells99 · 24/08/2020 20:38

I think it's a beautiful name

Lelophants · 24/08/2020 20:42

To me it sounds soft and round and pretty. A bit like Camilla but less snooty.

Madieracake · 24/08/2020 21:06

I have an Imogen and love the name. She is always being complimented as it is not overly popular here in Scotland. I am actually shocked at how many dislike it.

Twelve8Ts · 25/08/2020 20:30

I’ve just had a baby and named her Imogen and I get so many compliments on it, people seem to love it!

sunyla · 25/08/2020 21:16

It's not my favourite name but I actually quite like it.

ellenpartridge · 25/08/2020 21:28

I really like it. It's a nice classic name. I know various Imogens from 30s and 20s down to preschoolers and don't have any particular connotations with it. It doesn't seem particularly posh. To me it has a similar vibe to something like Harriet.

zigaziga · 25/08/2020 21:33

I love the name Imogen and Immy as a nickname. I’ve actually always thought of it as quite an unobjectionable name like Charlotte or something... not everyone’s favourite but I can’t imagine someone being shocked at the name or really hating it... but maybe I was wrong.
DH has a relative called Imogen but had he not it would have been a front runner for DD. --Truthfully, I like it more than her actual name—

ZigZagPlant · 25/08/2020 21:34

It’s a lovely name.

LittleGwyneth · 26/08/2020 12:09

It's a gorgeous name - there's one person on this board who hates it and talks about that a lot, but generally speaking it's one of those names that people either love or are neutral on. One of those rare names which suits a child and an adult, and would work for any career path.

I've heard people talking about someone who was on Big Brother but as someone in their mid-twenties I have no idea what they're talking about, so I think that association is very much gone.

PlantPotting · 26/08/2020 12:18

Just checked the most recent official ONS statistics released today and Imogen is down a few more places this year from last year. Now at number 45 in the charts. Down from 41. So it's fairly steady, not like it's falling out of favour at all, but also it's not booming upwards either. Popularity wise it's therefore a excellent choice I think as it's not too "trendy".

Aside from all that, I love the name and think it's so beautiful. Glad it's at the top of your list @baitandtackle it's very elegant

mollyminniemo · 26/08/2020 15:43

Don't like it either- Its same bracket as Harriet, Olivia to me- as someone else said "aspirational poshness" but lacking anything that pretty or individual to me. Just being honest.

perfumeistooexpensive · 26/08/2020 15:57

I really like it. It’s classy.

Frazzlerock · 26/08/2020 19:25

I love Imogen! It's on our girls list

namenerd · 28/08/2020 01:53

I quite like the name 'Imogen'. It almost has a magical feel to me, I have no idea why 😂. Also, you could use the nickname 'Immy' which is so so cute 😍

ncdtoday123 · 28/08/2020 02:02

I love it. Sounds very traditional and like a strong self assured woman, not too prissy or girlie

MrsKypp · 28/08/2020 02:03

I don't like the sound of it. Reminds me of Brunhilde (weirdly). It's sort of harsh and tough, somehow.

JanewaysBun · 28/08/2020 07:09

It's lovely. It's not "frilly" or old lady/Victorian maid chic but a nice strong name

Sunflowers24 · 28/08/2020 10:28

I really dislike it. It sounds so unfeminine and harsh. The three syllables don't work well together imo.
