What does everyone think of this name? My other children both have two middle names aswell. Julie is after my grandma so definitely want that in there. Unsure on Eve, I love Myra though! Last initial is W.

Why do people never suggest you shouldn't call a child

Jon or Robert because they would be assigned with the killers of James Bulger

Ian because he committed the same murders as Myra Hindley

Jeremy because of Jeremy Bamber

Etc

Or is only female murderers people have a problem with?
If it is about the severity then we should have the same problem with Ian.

Hopethiswilldo · 01/08/2020 12:21

Not Mira, that's a shower.

VincaMinor · 01/08/2020 12:23

Was going to say i love Lyra but you want M.

AllPlayedOut · 01/08/2020 12:24

If it is about the severity then we should have the same problem with Ian.

It's about how common the name is. People will likely know many other Ians, famous and ordinary. They won't have many other connotations with the name Myra, except possibly the shower company but that's spelled differently.

VincaMinor · 01/08/2020 12:25

People don't associate Ian so much with Ian Brady because Ian is a much more popular name so people don't only associate it with him. Not a female thing or people wouldn't pick Rose

Bettyhatesavocados · 01/08/2020 12:30

Meredith

Merle (French for blackbird). There was an actress way back called Merle Oberon.

Oh come on it's not about sex (the same very much applies to Adolf) it's about those names being far more widely used so people have multiple associations with them. If you play word association the vast majority of people in Britain will associate Myra with Hindley but far fewer would associate Ian with Brady there are dozens of famous Ian's (McKellen, Wright, Botham, Brown) I genuinely couldn't name another Myra. Rose (West) and Mary (Bell) haven't had the same affect because again people have multiple associations with those names.
TheDIsiilusionedAnarchist · 01/08/2020 12:35

Myra is fine. Just say ‘Hindley? no it’s after Myra Hess’ and make them look the ignorant ones. The Moors murders were before I was born, your daughter’s peers and their parents won’t have a strong association with it. Their grandparents might but they’ll die off pretty soon.

It’s a pleasant name, it’s not unique to Hindley and
It ties in beautifully with current name trends eg Lyra, Maia, Lola etc while being underused.

CherryRipe1 · 01/08/2020 12:37

Nyree or the correct Polynesian spelling: Ngaire

AllPlayedOut · 01/08/2020 12:40

I'm 35 so that old I hope, and I definitely have strong associations with Hindley. I think the name will continue to do for some time yet.

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2020 13:01

Meira is another welsh form of Mary.
MEY-rah.
Julie is nice but Eve is a bit of a filler middle name.

Durgasarrow · 01/08/2020 13:03

Myra sounds like a parrot name.

2155User · 01/08/2020 13:03

Maura or Maiya

Oneandabean · 03/08/2020 20:56

I wouldn’t associate it with Hindley. I think it’s a nice name and if you like it go for it.
Otherwise Mara, maya, maeve?

LeeMiller · 03/08/2020 21:07

I immediately think Hindley, sorry. I'm in my 30s and have never met or heard of another Myra, so I associate it with her.

Myra is still too associated with Hindley.

Violetparis · 04/08/2020 19:37

I thought Myra Hindley too. I knew a girl called Marla at school, always liked the name.

I agree Myra will never make a comeback because of the association. Maya is lovely as an alternative.

It's a shame because it's actually a nice name but you really can't use it imo.

Cado12 · 05/08/2020 00:08

As aforementioned, definitely not Myra as you think Hindley. Same reason you shouldn’t call a boy Adolf!

How about Maeva ?

Smile19 · 05/08/2020 20:30

I did the same as you OP. Went through family names and fell in love with Myra. Didn't really know about Hindley living abroad as a child and even as an adult I'm not interested in serial killers etc. So I was completely oblivious. My husband didn't make the link straight away either, but once it was made it was difficult to put to one side.

Initially I thought I didn't care. After all we have Rose (West), Ted/ Theodore (Bundy), Belle (Gunnes) etc. And these names are considered fine. However...whilst I came to the conclusion I'd be fine with being called Myra, I didn't want to pass the 'burden' to my child in case they didn't feel the same. Although I would like to think in another 10 years it would be fine.

IMO it sucks as it's a beautiful name and I still feel it's really unfair it appears to be ruined (for now) and I really hope it makes a come back. If you end up being brave enough to use it, then I do think children born now won't really know about it. It'll be people my age and above that will make the link.

No other suggestions other than maybe Mary or a varient. My daughter ended up with a completely different name.

JudyGemstone · 05/08/2020 20:36

Agree Myra is forever tainted.

But why isn't Rose (West) I wonder?

WhattheHhashappened · 05/08/2020 20:41

Maia definitely!
Has a similar sound to Myra without the connotation.
My-a instead of My-ra
