Ottilie or Penelope?

Hi all

Dd2 due Dec. We are struggling after using the only 2 names we could agree on with our first

My fav is Ottilie, where I am it's not commonly used, I don't know any but aware its rising. Dh dislikes this name

Penelope (penny) is our 2nd choice but it's more popular and I'm really not one to like top 100 names, but it is a family name which is why we would use it.

Baby due in Dec.

I like feminine and classic names, not too twee old lady or unusual but not top 100

Dh hates girls names basically!!

Thank you :)

I like Helena! I had unfortunate experience with Claudia and antonia and anything like cassie, Carrie, carys including cassandra etc is a no from dh but thank you!

Philippa?

OrchidJewel · 18/07/2020 14:26

I used my 2 favorite names on my 3rd child not expecting to have a 4th and I used 3rd childs middle name for 4th child. No one has batted an eyelid or even noticed

thetrolleywitch · 18/07/2020 14:27

Felicity
Isadora
Posy (from Ballet Shoes)

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 14:28

Philippa was a no from dh but thank you :)

@OrchidJewel oooh that's always a good thought, however we picked dd1 middle name to be middle so it was never shortened which is why we'd not use that, or our chosen dd2 middle name for a first name but thanks

Felicity was on our list too but again, he disliked it the 2nd time we looked at it

I liked the other two but again dh didn't! He's more picky than most women I swear!!!

Sorry really hate Ottilie.

TheoneandObi · 18/07/2020 14:34

Don't like Ottilie at all. Too twee, too try hard. Can't explain! In the same category as Ruby and Elodie and Lila and many others! Sorry!
Penelope is better.

OrchidJewel · 18/07/2020 14:35

Not keen on either, but of the two, Penelope.

flooredbored · 18/07/2020 15:15

I love Penelope. Not keen on Ottolie.

Coralie?

TheWitchCirce · 18/07/2020 15:28

Persephone
Arden
Eliza

midsomermurderess · 18/07/2020 16:12

Penelope. OttIlie is ridiculous. And that contorted pronunciation suggested by a PP. It's so bloody Hyacinth Bucket.

daisypond · 18/07/2020 16:45

What pronunciation do you mean? Which is the Hyacinth Bucket one?

Heh1991 · 18/07/2020 17:01

I prefer Ottilie but agree with other posters that it’s not a good choice if DH dislikes it! Sounds tricky pleasing him! Thinking off similar names how about:

Madeleine (Maddie)
Romilly (Romy/Millie)
Liliana (Lily)

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 17:22

Liliana, romilly and coralie he doesn't like either

Just to add, he liked it at first but each time we play about with names it gets further down the list
He doesn't hate it but it's not a loved name by him is what I meant.. Regardless as I said before, we won't use a name that either of us dislike obviously!!

Madeline was on our list but I cannot shake madfy mcann association that I have with the name. Also nannies for a maddy before so that's a no, but thanks so much for suggesting!

Sorry re ottilie.. To the above about how he feels

I think someone mentioned otters after we first liked it and that put him off.

Ottilie is since off the list officially now but please keep your thoughts on penelope and any other suggestions coming! :)

TildaTurnip · 18/07/2020 17:31

I loved the name Ottilie when I was pregnant. I now very much dislike it. My husband said it was Ottilie awful. I liked Ophelia too and he said it sounded like ‘I feel ya’. It annoyed me so much at the time but actually glad he put me off them now.

Names I liked and were vetoed:
Anouk (DH said Anouk and a cranny)
Anoushka
Matilda
Beatrix (DH said Beer Tricks)

I wish I’d thought of PP’s suggestion of asking him to write 20 names he liked.

hannahfaith · 18/07/2020 17:42

I have a Penelope with the nn Poppy
Other names I like that are similar to Ottiline are:
Odette
Ettaline (edda-line)

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 18:09

@TildaTurnip oh wow that's similar to us! I like both ottilie and ophelua during pregnancy but can't say either I've loved for years... Maybe it's a weird hormone thing haha

Though dh doesn't quite go as far as yours did! I also liked anouska, anais, amadis and matilda but all were a no for whatever reason!

Back to the list we have then... If anyone is still reading this later messages..

Penelope
Diana
Julia
Juliet

Added Helena but he just said no.. Just 'doesn't like it'
I'll be interested in his list of 10/20 when or if he ever does it!

MrsMime · 18/07/2020 18:38

Calliope?

TildaTurnip · 18/07/2020 18:55

I love Juliet!

Roselilly36 · 18/07/2020 19:09
