Ottilie or Penelope?

Hi all

Dd2 due Dec. We are struggling after using the only 2 names we could agree on with our first

My fav is Ottilie, where I am it's not commonly used, I don't know any but aware its rising. Dh dislikes this name

Penelope (penny) is our 2nd choice but it's more popular and I'm really not one to like top 100 names, but it is a family name which is why we would use it.

Baby due in Dec.

I like feminine and classic names, not too twee old lady or unusual but not top 100

Dh hates girls names basically!!

Thank you :)

Sorry Ottilie is'awful like a wet French otter.

Penelope is a great name.

rottiemum88 · 18/07/2020 19:24

Not a fan of Ottilie. Don't mind Penelope but hate nn Penny. I like Persephone. It's what we'd have used if DS had been a DD, but we 100% won't be having any more so I just live in hope someone I know will use it one day Grin

I think that your chosen name is so lovely. My husband and I looked through names together. He was not as keen on the name which was my favourite for a start but I was determined that it was suited to our child. When they were born, my husband agreed that it suited them! I still love it, as does my husband and our child and they will will be 8 years old soon!

Good luck! In the worse case scenario, if when you meet your child and they really don’t suit the name that you’ve chosen then refer to your default list!

Fromthebirdsnest · 18/07/2020 19:44

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 21:21

More mixed feelings then!

Thanks all :)

Juliet is my favorite out of those.

I think give up discussing for now, he will just say no to everything (which happened me) in the end he forgot he hated the name when I said it at 3 months and went for it. For the rest of my 3 kids I kept names to myself and gave 3 at the end.

It really is too early

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 22:21

@orchidjewel I appreciate what you are saying, I feel like he needs to be in the moment and not distracted etc to have a useful conversation but for personal reasons it is helping us to think about names 'so soon' because we've had a difficult pregnancy so far
Each to their own :)

Going to chat next week then probably leave it until October / November.. I'd like to keep open minded with two options so when she arrives if we really feel strongly for one over the other we can have that choice. Maybe daft to some :)

fruitbrewhaha · 18/07/2020 22:27

What about Marigold or Primrose?

Cicily ?

whichteaareyou · 18/07/2020 22:59

Giselle- NN- Gigi or Elle
Tabitha
Fleur

My ultimate fave is Ottie tho

whichteaareyou · 18/07/2020 23:00

Ivy is a great name as well

TeeBee · 18/07/2020 23:01

How about Orla?

TeeBee · 18/07/2020 23:03

Or Aurelie

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 18/07/2020 23:13

Amelie?

I think that's a lovely name, I've had two boys though so never got to use it.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 18/07/2020 23:26

I liked Juliette but hubby wasn't keen.

What about Aurelie if you like the ee sound at the end (hard to know how things go with surnames)

CasuallyMasculine · 18/07/2020 23:42

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a difficult pregnancy, OP. That must be tough. He hasn’t had a difficult pregnancy, though!

How about Phoenicia? Or my all-time favourite - Oriol Smile

Pygmyseahorse · 18/07/2020 23:48

Other than tabitha and orla those names suggested have all been turned down, but many are lovely thanks for suggesting

Amelie is pretty but I find too popular, I know over 10 babies and over 10 children called amelie or amelia so wouldn't use it myself

@CasuallyMasculine I know what you mean but I'd include him in the emotional and mental strain it's had on us both, physically obviously yes I have had the tough pregnancy.. Any losses or worrying results I find do upset both parents...
Now as for those names.. Can't say I have heard of them! How are they pronounced?
Possibly a bit too out there compared with dd1 is my initial thoughts

List continues! I'll try to add some of these back in and see if he notices :)

I always loved the names 'Ottilie' and 'Penelope'. My top two!

However, yesterday at the park, I heard a mum call her daughter "Ottilieeee" and all I could think of was Ottilie Bottilie (Utterly Butterly) and it's ruined it for me!

I love the name Penelope though. 😁

CasuallyMasculine · 19/07/2020 00:06

Now as for those names.. Can't say I have heard of them! How are they pronounced?

The first one is pronounced Feneesha.

The second one like Orry Ol. As in Lady Oriol Bowden Smile

Pygmyseahorse · 19/07/2020 00:18

Juliet and Julia are on the list but not got far with julietta or other etta ending names, whether it's him or me really...

Those names are very unique, probably a bit too out there for us, esp with our surname and dd name but thanks anyway.. Good to know how to properly pronounce them!

How about Lorelei?

TeeBee · 19/07/2020 01:36

Or Marta, if you ever read the Heidi books.

mrs87 · 19/07/2020 07:25

Juliet is my favourite of all those mentioned - I love the name and it will be a middle name if baby due in 7 weeks is a girl (surprise gender). The only reason I'm not using it as a first name is that I'm so scared of it ended up getting shortened to "Julie" by other people, family etc - and i feel like that's a totally different name and doesn't have the same feel. Makes me think of an older lady at work or something (no offence to any Julies out there!) I do however love the nickname "Jules/Jools".

Another I love but am not using is Josephine - nn Josie or Jojo. Only reason not is that I have an auntie Jo Grin
