Thoughts on these girls names

Currently trying to decide on names and no girls names are really floating my boat, there are a few I like, but there always seems to be a reason to avoid. DH doesn’t seem to have much of an opinion, but keeps suggesting we go with Rosie because our 3 year old wants to call the baby this (male or female). I am not convinced allowing a 3 years old carte blanche to name our baby is the right move, so thought I’d ask strangers on the internet to instead. So, opinions on my list or suggestions welcome!

Anais - English people will mispronounce
Ophelia - too much
Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong
Poppy - like don’t love
Flora - really like it, but the spread
Florence - could be shortened to Flora
Posy
Lavinia - too much
Dolly - too kitsch?
Astrid - too Nordic?
Viola
Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up?
Agnes
Agatha - too granny
Petra
Delphine - too much
Hattie
Iris - too like isis?

I like Rose- NN Rosie
Our DS1 chose DS2's name. We couldn't come up with anything better. TBH once we told him we were thinking about his suggestion he quickly forgot about it and cane up with ever more silly names. He's now totally forgotten it was his idea.

Ilovethemapples · 06/07/2020 20:29

Flora Agnes Agatha are lovely

CookieDoodles · 06/07/2020 20:33

From your list I like Florence and also Hattie. (We have chosen Harriet, but she will most likely be called Hattie day to day).
I also like...

Eliza (this is is the second name we have chosen)
Ada
Lola
Isobel

I also like these shortened versions of other names (so you'd need to decide which her official name would be on BC which was my dilemma!)

Lottie (Charlotte)
Lizzie (Elizabeth)
Penny (Penelope - don't actually like this as a full name though)

Anais - Sorry definitely will Be mispronounced by majority
Ophelia - I think it’s pretty but it’s shot right up to one of the more popular names which might influence your choice
Leonie - sorry I just can’t like it. I know one and she’s so annoying
Poppy - Sweet
Flora - Nope
Florence - I really like this and wanted it for DD but DH vetoed didn’t like Flo as a nn I like flossy as a nn with it
Posy - nope
Lavinia - sorry no
Dolly - Confused
Astrid - I think it’s lovely. I knew a few as a kid in the 90s but haven’t heard it much now
Viola
Marielle - too fussy
Agnes - makes me think of a ghost for some reason
Agatha - too old lady
Petra - hmmm
Delphine - I actually think it’s pretty
Hattie - love Hattie
Iris - Not too like Isis very pretty but again very popular at the moment if that’s an issue

mylittleavalon · 06/07/2020 20:47

Think Delphine is lovely from your list. It's gentle, not popular (if that bothers you) and pretty without being too frilly. Also like Florence, Iris and Marielle. Not quite sure about Viola because of the instrument. What about Violet?

janetmendoza · 06/07/2020 20:48

Astrid is my favourite or Hattie if you use Harriet as the full name

ellenpartridge · 06/07/2020 20:51

Rosie is the nicest one on the list! Also like Florence, Flora, Poppy, Iris. Hattie quite cute too if it's short for Harriet

janetmendoza · 06/07/2020 20:52

Although if you watched The Office usa version you will know that Astrid can be mispronounced!

CookieDoodles · 06/07/2020 20:59

I've heard Florence shortened to Florrie a few times if you don't like Flo or Flossy)

pinkpinecone · 06/07/2020 21:09

Anais - nice but English people will definitely mispronounce
Ophelia - it's pretty bit I hear 'I feely her' in it the which puts me off
Leonie - not keen
Poppy - pretty
Flora - margarine or gut bacteria

Florence - nice, it's a lovely classic name
Dolly - the sheep
Astrid - this name has been ruined for me by the 'ass turd' association
Viola - a large violin
Marielle - Its pretty sounding
Agnes and Agatha - sound frumpy
Petra - i really like this name, sound chic

Delphine - really like if although no idea if it's dated in France
Hattie - like it

Iris - nice and I don't think people will think of Isis

BigSister2020 · 06/07/2020 21:17

I worked with a Greek Cypriot woman called Florianda which I thought a beautiful name. Occasionally it was shortened to Flori Smile

TempsPerdu · 06/07/2020 21:40

Anais - quite like but agree it’s doomed to be mispronounced in the U.K.
Ophelia - no - too frilly, tragic association and not that unusual nowadays

Leonie - not chavvy imo but I’m not especially keen
Poppy - no, cutesy and twee
Flora - it’s fine but I’ve always found it a bit heavy sounding
Florence - nice name but too popular for me
Posy - far too twee for me; can’t picture it on a grown woman
Lavinia - too severe sounding (like a fusty old aristocrat) and I don’t like the ‘lav’ sound
Dolly - not keen. Better as a nn for Dorothy.
Astrid - OK but I think it’s having a ‘moment’ right now
Viola - really like this; makes a refreshing change from über-trendy Violet - but pronunciation could be an issue
Marielle - quite like Meriel but not keen on this - a bit frilly
Agnes and Agatha - too frumpy; less ‘granny chic’ than ‘grumpy old great aunt’!
Delphine - very pretty; unusual and sophisticated but without the pronunciation issues of Anais
Hattie - like if short for Harriet
Iris - really like this; simple and elegant and I love the meaning and goddess link

My shortlist would be Viola, Iris, Hattie (Harriet) and Delphine.

daisypond · 06/07/2020 21:43

I like Flora a lot. And Iris. I also have a sneaking love of Posy. It’s traditionally short for Josephine, I think. I like Viola, but there will be pronunciation issues. I like the others apart from:
I strongly dislike Ophelia. Not Dolly. Not Astrid.

Camilla
Larissa
Marianne
Dorothea

Orphlids · 06/07/2020 21:49

I like a lot of the names on your list, OP, I have a few of them on my own.

Ophelia - wouldn’t say it was too much, but it has sadly been forever ruined for me after hearing “Ophelia tits”.
Lavinia - not too much, it is BRILLIANT!
Astrid - wonderful, strong name, but it looks like it’s going to become jolly popular soon, if that bothers you.
Viola - love it.
Marielle - very pretty.
Agnes - quite cool, but a bit on the ugly side.
Agatha - yes, witchy, ugly and granny-like to my ears. Zero sex-appeal.
Petra - love it.
Delphine - sublime.
Iris - ha ha, your isis comment made me laugh. No, I’d never thought of the similarity between the two names, you’re safe. I like it.

Some others we are considering are Ingrid, Gaia, Greta, and Vida.

Yika · 06/07/2020 21:50

I love the name Leonie, I find it beautiful and not at all chavvy.

I like Astrid and wonder if you would also like Ingrid or Sigrid.

If you like Agnes and Agatha, what about Aglaia? Or Ines which is a variant of Agnes.

Flora is lovely. I prefer it to Florence.

Whatsyourflava · 06/07/2020 22:44

Love Florence Ophelia and Hattie

Whatsyourflava · 06/07/2020 22:45

How about

Margaret nn Maggie or Peggie
Edith nn Edie
Sadie
Pearl
Delilah
Jemima

MushyPeasAreTheDevilsFood · 06/07/2020 22:48

These are my favourites. Im Not keen on any of the Others

Anais
Ophelia
Leonie
Flora
Florence
Marielle
Agatha
Petra
Iris

riotlady · 06/07/2020 23:00

I really like Rosie! I think Iris, Agatha and Agnes are my faves from your lists. Lavinia is awful but the rest are all quite nice.

Astrid is a beautiful name but as a pp mentioned The Office has ruined it a bit

LarkDescending · 07/07/2020 00:13

Suggestions: Marina, Martha, Rosa, Saskia, Tessa?

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/07/2020 00:15

Rosalie nn Rosie as your DC likes it and it's a lovely name.

Rosalie Faye

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/07/2020 00:16

Of your list it would be Delphine (Orphan Black fan)

Maduixa · 07/07/2020 07:45

Anais - English people will mispronounce They may not know HOW to pronounce it - but you can tell them and they'll remember.
Ophelia - too much agreed
Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong Seems fine to me - it's just a normal French name.
Poppy - like don’t love Reminds me of US President Bush I, aka "Poppy Bush"
Flora - really like it, but the spread I like it too.
Florence - could be shortened to Flora Prefer Flora - or maybe Fleur?
Posy not a fan - reminds me too much of posing
Lavinia - too much It's classic.
Dolly - too kitsch? Nickname territory for me.
Astrid - too Nordic? I know an (American) Astrid, and she is always hard at work telling everyone it's AWE-strid, not ASS-trid. And that's even before we talk about whether the second syllale is TRID vs TREE. I'd consider Ingrid or Sigrid to like the vibe but avoid confusion.
Viola Musical instrument.
Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up? It's not, but are you going to enforce the traditional pronunciation (mar-YAY)? British people will likely say mar-EE-ell.
Agnes A love it or hate it name.
Agatha - too granny French jeweller, for me.
Petra I like it.
Delphine - too much How? I really like this name.
Hattie Not a fan. Harriet or Hatice, nn Hattie - OK.

Tinamou · 07/07/2020 07:48

My favourites from your list are Poppy and Iris - both gorgeous.

Least favourites are Dolly and Agnes.
